Unit Preview: T80 MBT

Okay, having read through all the threads on creating units and such I though I'd give it a bash. When I first opened up Moray (thanx Kinboat) i was lost to say the least. Fortunately there are some conversion tools out there on the web so I downloaded som free 3d models and converted the format. Here's one I fiddled with and hopefully I can get to grips with Flcster and make this into a fully working unit. Later, I hope to make my own.

The original model was made by Pece.

And here's another view with a slightly different colour scheme. I'm trying to get that spotted sort of look.

Very nice; Kal-el pointed me towards 3d cafe the other day and I was going to do the t80, but my 3d program couldn't use the file (incompatable)- looks like it works fine in moray though.

I'm not sure how to use Povray/moray and I think Kinboat may be on holiday or sumthing - but its not too hard doing tanks.
1st thing to do is get the perspective right, the camera needs to be fairly high up and to the SE of the model- you should also be able to set the camera to isometric, rather than false perspective so that the image is not too foreshortened; if you cant, moving the cmaera far away from the model and using a high degree of zoom should do the same job.

Good luck with this one- it should make a good unit.

I'm not on vacation just really busy. I generally set the camera around 0,-800,600... x,y,z... and put the main light around 200,-200,1000 x,y,z... And I'll try to send you a few samples to help you out Glare, I'm sending them in a few moments in fact And thanks for the info Smoking Mirror... I guess I gotta find some free time to wrap things up...

Wow! Cool! Now when I play the Russians, I won't feel awkward building modern armor that looks like an M1 Tank! I'm definately using the T80.

What program do you use Smoking mirror, Maya?

The cypress does not answer. He knows there is madness in him, and freedom, and imagination, and spirit. But the flame will not understand, the flame will not believe.

Wow, Maya!? I wish
I use a 3d program that comes with corel draw 8, called corel dream 3d, its cheap, but effective at least when doing something small like a civ III unit, but it doesn't have any animation routines or a very good range of importing options.

You can download a free version of Maya from Aliaswavefront.com.

They allow you to get a Non-Commercial Personal-learning edition.

Im trying to fiddle with Maya now.. It's so complicated I think It will take years before I can do a unit with it.
