I would suggest settling in place, you should start coastal since you are on an island. Starting more inland would crowd your other cities as there probably won't be much room. Plus, I bet that grassland tile to the west will have either horses or iron.

Kill the French. They totally deserve it from an earlier RPC.

Elizabeth and the Balance of Power: Part I

Ahhhh!!!!! The pleasures of a normal game! Cows, and not living on the ice! Much more saner than Khmerville!

But onto the RPC game!

Not alot so far, as you would expect. We know it's Terra, we know we are on an island by ourselves. So onto the game.

I decided I definitely wanted London with access to the sea, so we settled in place.

4 sea tiles to work are not so bad. I am more concerned about lack of food, so thus I think London is a nice wonderspamming capital if I can outrace Industrious Lou to them!

We got 1 lone goody hut on this land which popped

OK, archery sooner than later now.

Techpath, well Liz starts with Fishing and mining, neither of which are useful right off the bat, so we went: agriculture/AH (no horses)/BW (Yes to copper)/archery (debatable if we needed this, got it anyway)/wheel and saved as I wanted some feedback on the next tech.

We explored our landmass pretty fast

Definitely some decent cities here, even the eastern desert area with it's insense. Perhaps iron and oil will be in the desert but we shall see. Anyway 2 grains, 2 seafood, gold and insense, decent health and happiness.

We meet the first AI,

Of course, the cursed French!

A little exploring with a fishing boat find Louie fairly close.

I was considering dropping an off-coast city onto that marble, but I would rather not "stir the pot" Just yet.

After teching AH and BW we find

Copper but no horse. Iron remains to be seen.

Then we meet Peter

Who is SW of us and west of Louie. Maybe we can get these two backstabbers to get into some conflicts here.

We get teh extra health quest.

Given our low food abundance I think we are putting ourselves too far behind with that!.

We settle York to claim clams/stone and another seafood and copper after the border pop.

We are starting on another settler and after finishing the wheel we saved.

So what is the next tech???

Mysticism for border pops to claim the copper.

Masonry to work the stone and perhaps try for the pyramids.

Pottery for some cottages

Sailing for trading amongst these coastal cities (less urgency for roads) and possibly the GLH.

A nice smooth start so far.

Alos at least Hinduism and Judaism have been founded, I can hear Isabella's chanting in the back.

Hm. Techpath.

I'd go Myst-Sailing-Masonry-Pottery-Writing

I'd drop a city on the mainland. It might cost a bit, but I don't think you're going to cause much distress early on unless Louis is hemmed in from the south as well. Besides, controlling that cape and the waters around it might be quite valuable strategically speaking. However, you're going to need a monument and library in there quick to fend off French culture.

There are two great wonders. the mids and the lighthouse. Unfortunatelly you wont be able to build the both. Considering that there are some wonderspammers nearby, I guess even now is too late for TGL. I'd research Masonry next, followed by Myst- Sailing- Writing. You don't need the copper right now. Your island is so small, that you can fogbust it entirely.

Ah and yes Louis must die. He is "annoying french" and there will be a roleplaying element. Ironically he is your colsest neighbour on the mainland, like in the real life.

Without seeing much of the map, I was going to suggest plopping a city just north of the French blocking that peninsula and then building 2 or 3 more cities moving towards the tip to form a colony before pressing on to the new world, but then I remembered some lessons from history and it might be better to steer clear of "Europe", using the island as a fortress to build up your civ and let the other civs fight it out on the big island while you police the big dogs. You can then focus on teching towards astronomy.

Well there's nothing that says the English can't win the hundred years war in this scenario and establish a bridgehead.

If he gets below 10% of the pop, he's going to have to get pop somehow. That rule is deceptively warmonger-friendly if just a few things happen. Actually, this is why I'll be in the shadows for the first time in a while .

I've run the game up to 235 AD. BROKEN

Spoiler:
What is? GLH is:

This was the 5th city I settled. The second I put it down, without even defenses, at pop 1, BPT went up by 6 at 70% science. Also, GPT went UP by 1 .

Compass is obviously my next tech.

I'm going to try and bulb or just beeline astro and whore out the new world to myself. Meanwhile I've got some barb cities to take with swords.

Ok, now how did this happen?

Well, opened hunting ---> AH while building worker. Scouted with warrior. Worker made a grassland mine then pastured cows. Tech after AH was BW, wheel, Masonry, Sailing. I scouted with a workboat (you might guess based on my minimap).

What does that mean? I made York in the same place as mad (even though I didn't look at his summary first, it's logical - you want to stone early and room for seafood to work the gold city also, and you want stone ASAP).

I got mids. Then GLH. Then I whored aesthetics around a lot to backfill/catch up. I used the GE on the great library in my wonderspammy capitol, then built PAYA to get into FR ASAP as per the rules.

The techs probably look weird since I went the drama/music route, got the free artist (we DO want london double legendary, right?) and will probably build sistine chapel as that will make my life much easier later. I'm building a settler too so maybe I'll try for that marble first. Sadly, I'm only at 8.something % pop but that's why I'm starting to queue up some swords after the forge and some settlers - have to stay balanced!

Look at the BPT. That's a LOT of BPT for TMIT . And where's the warring ? Oh yeah. I'm planning on chaining caps later. Right.

I'll probably build 6 settlers as if they were military and "invade" the new world with a colony ASAP. Then capture barb cities over there.

Religious differences will lead to fireworks, and probably not on me .

I'll probably use infantry to wreck peter then just navally capitulate as many people as possible. Sounds good...but it's for another night since I work tomorrow!

Why do you need archery? Don't build a barracks, build a workboat. Get mysticism, and I'd say drop a city soon so you don't have to launch a naval invasion.

Wait till Mad plays to that point, or look at the save. I put it in spoilers so that mad isn't bothered with it until then!

Spoiler:

GLH and mids sure do help. If you do look at the save, check out the trade routes in each city. This is just the kind of game where the GLH shines the most. Having mids and TGL with philosophical isn't too bad either .

Settling on turn 1 was technically illegal by your variant rules because you controlled 100% of world population

You can probably still get GLH if you head straight at it. And Mids too.
Both will be great on this map, as I see it..

Hey Mad, why did you tech archery on this map (reminds me of a similar mistake I made in MC)? I was going to point out that you could fogbust the whole island entirely with warriors, but in your screenshots you're pretty much doing that already! With one more warrior barbs can't spawn on your island at all. Actually in your last SS that one between cities isn't needed for fogbust at that point and can just be moved over.
