The main issue here, apparently not addressed in the article, is not that players can create religious civilizations- that's not it at all. It's that, through being a religious civilization, people can access the power to magically heal their units, and cause rains of demonic animals. Some people are angered by this because they appear to transcend reality, as if being religious genuinely did give you tangible, physical advantages. They think that religion's advantages should be more in line with what they are in real life- that is to say, having a very united nation, zeal, conquest through conversion, and such things.
Personally, I think that the powers are fine- I think that they can be explained by science- 'Religious' powers are simply elabourate displays which strike awe into the hearts of rivals. |
