Post NY Times reviews SPORE

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/05/ar...er&oref=slogin

Quote:
As an intelligent romp through the sometimes contradictory realms of science, mythology, religion and hope about the universe around us, Spore both provokes and amuses. And as an agent of creativity it is a landmark. Never before have everyday people been given such extensive tools to create their digital alter ego.

Beginning with all manner of outlandish creatures — want to make a seven-legged purple cephalopod that looks like it just crawled out of somewhere between the River Styx and your brother-in-law’s basement? — and proceeding through various buildings and vehicles, Spore gives users unprecedented freedom to bring their imaginations to some semblance of digital life. In that sense Spore is probably the coolest, most interesting toy I have ever experienced.
The review was quite favorable. The fact that such an official paper wrote such an extensive article about a video game has to say something.

You would think the same people who hyped this game hyped the iPod.

"Hype" would be a pretty good word.

Yeah really. This weekend's cultural event is to stay home and play video games. LOL.

It was probably one of the most hyped games in history.

And of course with that much hype it couldn't live up to it.

But it is a game where many different types of people will play it, whether just creating creatures, cars, ships, planes or spaceships, attempting to take over a HUGE galaxy, or just playing through with a totally different creature each time.

Will Wright was quoted saying that he thinks it will pass the sims, personally it will have to go a loooonnngggg way to get to that.

I am curious what they have in the plans as regards expansion if they really expect it to beat the Sims.

I mean everyone bought the xpacks as each one added a little bit of gameplay, and more items.. they could do that easily with this game.

TBH I feel a bit cheated, I KNOW they will have purposly held stuff back for xpacks.

i don't think they purposely held back stuff. Theres only so much you can put in given the financial necessities of the company to have a product out.

What? Can you be so nieve that you don't think they will have been planning x-packs, and that it wouldn't have effected the scope of what went into the original game?

Mrt, I thought you were more realistic of the world than that!

They have been planning X-packs but I don't think was like "Hey, lets not add this in yet because we can make an X-pack", it was more like "Hey we need to get this product out and we can't put this in so we'll make it into an expansion"

Two sides of the same coin. They certainly have plenty of ideas that they haven't implemented, but it seems unlikely that they would hold out large, finished parts.
