This episode was the worst I've ever seen him do. He's completely oblivious to spore's potential, and doesn't seem to understand or grasp the very basic concept of the game, or why it's so simple.

A lot of games had a lot of potential, but critics review the actual thing, not what it could be in the future. I admit he goes a bit overboard sometimes, but the truth is Spore was originally advertised as something much deeper than it ended up being.

Now I bet it will be used as a 'milk cow' for expansions and getting more and more money from costumers who want the game it was meant to be in the first place. The Sims was fine from the beginning and expansions added optional stuff to it, but they might want to take the 10 expansions philosophy to a new level with Spore. Release an unfinished game and later complete it (instead of expand on it) through who knows how many expansions, which of course won't be free.

It was funny, but how he compares it to The Sims is rather absurd.

Some points are correct, but he is way off in many aspects. As I would expect.

Made a few biting wise-cracks (I especially liked the one about constructing p*nis monsters), but it mostly proved to me that fast talk + raunchy humour <> accuracy.
Saying that Will Wright should have just stopped designing games after Sims2 on the grounds that attempting to surpass one's previous work is impossible, was well pretty idiotic and defeatist. His biased strategic analysis makes me think he should have played the game some more, maybe on a higher difficulty setting.

The best criticism he made was suggesting that Spore won't be a Sims killer simply because designing creatures that posess minimalist social interactions does not equal the depth and empathy that the average user gets from micromanaging their Sim-person's life. That's probably 'spot on'.

What Will Wright should've done, considering Spore had been in development for years, is try to make something at least equal to his previous works (not necessarily as complex as the Simcity series), instead of what's essentially a robust creature/vehicle/building/spaceship creator with five shallow minigames slapped onto it.

If the Space Stage wasn't considerably better than the four previous phases, I'd be downright pissed instead of just disappointed.

Actually I consider his review to be spot on. He addressed all the issues of Spore as I see them.

It all comes down to the love-hate of Spore. You either love it or hate it.

I disagree. You love it, but thinks it needs more depth.

Yup, spot on. Spore is a simplistic 3d modeling software for kids, disguised as a video game

I think this review was pretty much on the mark. I tend to be a bit more equivocal than a lot of Spore's harsh critics (such as this guy) are, but I think the points are valid. The difference is that I don't consider its faults (and there are many) to be unforgivable.

Hahah, I feared the worst from our friend Yahtzee, but I don't have many major disagreements with him, although he focuses entirely on the gameplay and not on that weird, hard to describe, ethereal thing that I enjoy in Spore.
