I can't figure out how to get it to run. everything is installed correctly, but when i try to run it it tells me that drawsprocket can't switch to the right resolution. i keep trying to set it to the 1024x768. my mac is a widescreen with 1280x800 resolution. does anyone have any tips?

try posting this in the Civ3 Technical Support Forum, you'll probably get better results

Welcome to CFC, quickdraw5! There's also a Mac forum worth looking into. Good luck.

You've posted in the right place (welcome, by the way). To get the best and quickest help post what version of the game you're running, as well as what version of OsX - what kind of cpu is usually helpful as well, since all these can make a difference.

Which version of Civ3 are you trying to run? If it's the old MacSoft version then I don't think it's compatible with the Intel Macs running Leopard. That's the error I get if I try to run it on my Mac Pro in OS X 10.5.5

I think the MacSoft version might run in OS X 10.4 Tiger, but that seems a bit extreme as a solution.

Which version *precisely* are you running? Maybe you can get away with running one of the patches in Leopard? I've only tried the latest 1.29b2 patch.

1. Check the disk

If it is the old MacSoft version then the disk will have MacSoft's trademark printed at the bottom, and it will be a CD, not a DVD.
If it is the new Aspyr version then the disk will have "Sid Meier's Civilization Complete" printed on it, it will also have 'aspyr', and it will be a DVD.

2. Check the application's file name
If you can't check the physical disk for some reason, then find the game application file in the Finder - the one that you can double click to try to launch the game, and not a shortcut.

If the file is called "Civilization 3 Complete" then it is probably the new Aspyr version.
If the file is called "Civilization III" then it is probably the old MacSoft one.

3. Check the application file's version information
To remove all doubt, right click the icon and select "Get Info" in the contextual menu; or left click it and select the File->Get Info menu option in the Finder's menu bar; or left click it and use the shortcut Apple-I on the keyboard. A window will appear containing information about that application file. Look for "Version" in the list.

If the version string starts with '1.22' (or possibly '1.27' if you've chosen the Play the World file) then it is the new Aspyr version.
If it doesn't then it is the old MacSoft version.
