New to Civ -Query re Trade Icon

I'm currently playing my 2nd Civ game ever (Civ IV Warlords). I won the first one (Hathshepsut at 'Settler' level, Terra map). The second I'm playing as Korea (Settler level, Terra map).

In this game I noticed that all the other civilisations have an icon next to their names in the score box- three gold arrows in a kind of circle. The manual said it was a trade icon. However, I don't have that icon next to my name, only the religion icon.

Is this normal? And if it isn't, what do I have to do to get it?

I do have foreign trade routes with some civs, which is what I thought that icon meant.

Thanks.

Gayle

It's normal. Those arrows just mean you have foreign trade routes with those other civilizations. There is no need to have those three arrows to the right of your name on the scoreboard.

The arrows mean a trade network is established, not trade routes.

basically, it means that you CAN trade with them, but you are not necessarily. In addition to the in city trade routs, you can trade strategic/happy/healthy resources for other resources/gold per turn.
If you have a rout established, you are probably getting some trade routs in your cities with them, fetching a bit more gold. it will be a small amount but not negligible.

Trade routes are only established with civs that you have an open border agreement with.

Trade network enables resource trading and affects the spread of religions. The minimum requirements for this are either a road connecting you to another civ or THEY have Sailing w/ a clear route of sea.

Trade routes are the commerce you see in the city window under the foreign or domestic city's name. The minimum requirements for this are open borders with the civ and either a road connecting you to another civ or YOU have Sailing w/ a clear route of sea.

Ah, this explains so much.

(Like why I can't resource trade in the early game)
