No Giant Maps?
From what I can tell, there doesn't seem to be any way to get giant-sized maps like in Orbis in Fall Further, which struck me as odd since the guy who did Orbis is modding for Fall Further. Is there something I'm missing? Is there a tweak I don't know about?

Bigger than Huge size?
I can see why you'd want it, but I don't see how it would really be feasible. The turn time and memory issues are bad enough with huge maps, not to mention time spent loading iles, and crash rates. |

Orbis and FlavourMod have it. I certainly have the memory.

There was an internal version with the giant maps feature in the past, but I decided to remove it again after running some tests. Fall Further needs more memory than Fall from Heaven, FlavourMod or Orbis and since I was constantly getting MAFs on 32bit XP machines right at loading up giant maps with FF I thought a behaviour like this wouldn't be very feasible for anybody. Giant maps are really a borderline feature and it seems there was a reason Firaxis decided not to add bigger maps than huge ones.

Question - only slightly related to this thread though :sigh: - can Civ IV use the extra memory provided to it by a 64-bit OS?
I have 8gb of ram in my machine but I'm only running xp32 bit so the other ram is just there because I'm too lazy to store it. :P

As far as I did understand it, the problem with 32bit XP is, that on process alone is only allowed a maximum of 2GB RAM. Civ4 is easily reaching this limit if you want to play on giant maps and/or mods like Fall Further. You can circumvent this restriction by making a small modification to your boot.ini, but how many peole are going to do this? Afaik the problem doesn't exist with 64 bit Vista. Don't know about 32 bit Vista.

Prolly does. I've already made the modification to get 3gb, but I really should sucker up and get Vista.
It's just, with windows 7 on the way, and hearing good buzz about it (I actually was in the Win7 beta from MS and it is stellar. But the beta expired ) it's hard to justify putting down the cash for Vista.

The problem does exist with 32 bit vista and it is hard to change the memory configuration.
Or maybe it is easy to change the memory and I am just doing something wrong? |
