Yeah, I have been suggesting playable Celts for quite some time but that will probably have to wait until a Europe overhaul comes along.

Gauls, Franks, Celts... wouldn't it be easier to just call them all "white people" or "Europeans"?

My point is this: the continuity between France and the Gaul is exaggerated, mainly by Romanticist French folklore and superficial geographical similarities. RFC France spawns with the establishment of the Carolingian Empire so its clearly related to the Franks, which were not Gauls, but rather ended up their as one of the invading Germanic peoples that entered Roman territory in the 4th century.

I would like to see the French Franks and the Spanish Visogoths start off in Germany somewhere with nice big stacks, then forced by their settler and war maps to plough westwards to France and Spain and conquer any Romans/Celts living there. This would be nice and historical, could be more realistic than just flipping Roman cities, and could give the Celts a chance to hold out against both Rome and the Franks and establish their own France/Spain.

Say, that's a good idea! If the barbarians hadn't conquered Rome, then they would never have settled down into the germans, and the spanish and french never would have appeared. This could give Rome a chance to be the sole european power (a small chance, but a chance). My opinion is, if rome does not fall apart by the barbarian invasion, then france, germany and spain can only spawn if 1. They are empty, or 2. Rome is unstable and they have a revolution. Of course, I'm sure this idea is impossible, since if you played as any of those european powers and Rome just happened to live, I have no clue what would happen. But it's a good idea, right?

Heh... Okay, I'll do a few of these to see what happens.
Edit: wow, ten minutes later and 500 more auto-play turns to go. This is going to take a long time... (takes a shower, comes back) Auto-play turns remaining: 170... Okay, after nearly an hour of waiting, I open up WB. Things seem more or less historical, if a bit anachronistic. New Amsterdam is still under Dutch control, Louisiana is still Spanish, the Portugese have Brazil, Canada is under join British/French control, South Africa is British, and a lot of old cities are still around (or got refounded): Carthage, Hippo, Susa, and Parsa are intact and under barbarian/Independent control, Sur and Hattusa (now Sidon and Kayseri) are Ottoman, good old Babylon is alive and well in Arab hands. The Third Reich, appearing well ahead of schedule, have conquered or vassalized Italy, Greece, France, the Vikings, and Mexico, and muscled into Russia, as if going for a historical victory plus Zimmerman Telegram; they are #1 in score by a wide margin. Here are the un-historical bits: the Dutch have colonized areas that should have gone to the English; namely, India and Australia (though not Delhi, which is Independent). Paris is the holy city of Christianity. The Chinese seem to have conquered Mongolia instead of vice versa; the Mongols have lost their capital and are now China's vassal. Portugal is a vassal of Spain. Ethiopia seems to have succumbed to native Impis, but the Mali are still not only alive but sovereign. The Egyptians, Vikings, and Inca are still alive. Most bizarrely, Egypt is labeled as the "Tributary Haixi State", despite not being anybody's vassal as far as I can tell. Last edited by G-Max; Oct 09, 2011 at 04:36 PM. |

Interesting city-placement by the A.I here on a 3000B.C Mali game, nice to see Damascus occasionaly. Most curious about Spasinou Charax, which was Persian up until a few turns ago, which civ did that name come from?

That's Susa/Shush. AKA Antiochia in Susiana AKA Seleucia Susiana. That's a Greek city name, I think.

No, Shush spawns one tile northeast of that.
Anyway, USA on a 3000BC Marathon start, round 2: Monty has capped to the Netherlands and the Incas have capped to Arabia (wtf lol). Rome and Mongolia are the vassals of communist France (wtf lol), the Vikings have capped to Ethiopia (wtf lol), and Germany is the master of Portugal and Japan (wtf lol). The UK, in addition to being the master of Mali, has converted to Islam. Khmer is China's , but I expected that. India is alive and nobody's vassal; nobody is Spain's vassal. Buddhism has spread like the plague to places like Trondheim and Tenochtitlan. Here's the punch line: NOBODY EVER BUILT BYZANTIUM, so the Ottoman capital is still Sogut. The Mongols still control Karakorum, but it's not their capital. Other major cities are missing or in weird places but I can't go into further detail because this stupid game just encountered an unexpected error and had to shut down. F*** you, Microsoft!
