HELP. Can't get Win ME to run Civ DOS

My Civ1 DOS (with the four floppies) loaded and is running great on my Windows 98 computer.

Today I tried to load it on my Windows ME laptop and I can't get it to work.I tried making a short cut to the install game icon, and the computer says it can not find civ exe and needs the "spec."

Can anyone help me? I love this old DOS version which I just got about a month ago.

Has anyone gotten it to run on Windows ME?

Please help if you can.

I can think of 2 things:

1. Try hiting F8 (or shift-F8) just before Windows loads up (you've gotta be quick. Windows loads fast!). There might be a menu with "load command prompt".

2. Try a boot disk. Create a boot disk in Windows, and reboot with the disk in the drive.

I use the MS DOS prompt (under Start/Programs/Accessories.)

The black screen and the prompt come up fine.

And I managed to load all 4 floppies from the A drive to my C drive (under MPS) and I could see all the things it was loading. It said installation was complete. But it never seemed to install.

I can open my C drive. All the stuff is there. But if I click on some of those things marked Civ, the screen asks me what graphic mode, etc I want, I tell them, and then the screen goes dark. Sometimes it makes a terrible noise and I have to turn off the computer.

Has anyone been successful loading Civ1 DOS to Windows ME. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 8000. It should be able to handle anything I would think.

It's driving me crazy.

Civ1 won't properly run under Windows 98.
The units move very very slowly.
It should be run in real DOS mode.
This is, of course, annoying, because you need DRIVERS, for your soundcard and your mouse.
The best solution is to grab an older PC, 486, with DOS. If you are a fanatic, you won't object. It is cheap.
Or can somebody run the game in Windows mode without slow downs?

I run Civ1 on an old Windows 3.1 machine, 10 years old. You can pick one up REALLY cheaply - people are usually happy just to give them away. Why not just get one specially for Civ?

I can run Civ on Windows 95 but sometimes it starts slowly. When this happens the music runs slow and the unit movement is slow. It's pretty much random as to whether it starts slow or fast for me on Windows 95. However, I do know that after my first successful battle, it always speeds up!

(Has anyone ever got ANYTHING to run successfully on Windows ME? )

Good question.

Most programs that don't work in Win98 usually work when you restart in DOS mode.. Hmm.. or maybe have a DOS partitiion. (might be simpler than buying another computer)

Win 98 vs Win ME

Civ 1 DOS runs fine on my Windows 98 desktop. (Slowly, but the music is there and all of the graphics.)

Civ 1 DOS is a mess on my Windows ME laptop. It asks what graphic mode I want, etc, then when I answer, the screen goes black. I never get music. Opening credits. Anything.

I have to press CTRL - ALT - DELETE to get out of it , and THEN sometimes the screen appears - no music - fuzzy graphics - can move a few things - and it just not perform right. So I have to press ctrl - alt -delete again to get out.

Can any of you get Civ1 DOS to work in ME? Can you get it to work on a laptop?

Still trying,

I've just encountered the slowness and the lack of music when playing Civ1 on my Windows ME machine. I guess I should try and get my dad to fix our 486 but if I told him that was the only reason I wanted it to work again, he might object.

I guess I could try it on my old laptop, but I try not to use it for games as the laptop screen doesn't do justice for graphics.

Btw, Windows ME is actually the most stable OS I've had in a long while.

You can run CIV 1 on Windows ME at just as well as any other computer..... except you can only have PC Speaker sounds. (well it works for me anyways!) And this isnt from the pretend DOS prompt either, just straight from Windows Explorer. Choosing no sound also makes the game run too slow as well.
