Keeping forests on improved tiles.

I know that at some point they changed CIV4 so that building a fort wouldn't clear the forest on the tile. Is there some way to do that for other improvements and cities also?

Well, only a few improvements are eligible for that. Lumbermills & reserves require the forest, while camps don't require it but don't automatically elimitate it. Sorry, but the regular versions of Civ IV won't allow you to leave forests in tiles with most kinds of improvements. The only way to change it would be modifying the XML file related to forests & improvements.

THat would be a little overpowered to mine a gold tile, or farm a corn and keep the forest and + bonus

You know, forests by default eliminate 1 . Maybe that option should be available, but with some penalties for the yield (i.e. a mine would add +1 instead of 2; whereas a cottage won't have the wealth bonuses from FS, Printing Press & Universal Suffrage).

So you can trade commerce and instant hammers for health? That sounds interesting.

So you mean for a worked forest tile to yield -1 , but no extra than are normally available when the tile is worked, so -1 , +0.5 .

Sounds interesting.

And you dont get any bonus hammers from chopping so it would be balanced then, since otherwise the extra health is a lot more powerful then the commerce.

I just played a game as the Khmer and also got the +2 per city evernt and + 1 per collesuem from national sports league .... No need for forests anywhere, chop chop em all .

I had the biggest cities I ever did make, along with Sushi Co and buying everysingle extra fish from the AI.

I found that the action to remove or leave forests on tiles when building improvements is controlled in the file, CIV4BuildInfos.xml. Basically there is an implicit chop action whenever you add an improvement to a forested tile. Editing CIV4BuildInfos.xml allows you to leave the forest when building a mine or quarry but to cut the forest when building a farm.

Thanks for the help. Being able ponder some of your responses and the game mechanics is what led me to the right answer.
