Deity Winner Registry

I was thinking that it would be interesting to keep a Registry (as part of the HOF) of all members who can show they have officially beaten Deity. It would be under the same restrictions as HOF game submissions, and a save game would have to be submitted as proof.

It would be interesting to have a simple table that shows the name of the member and then columns for each of the victory conditions. This would allow you to show that you had achieved multiple victory conditions against diety.

Thoughts?

As an aside, I do realize that "technically" this may be in the wrong forum. But thought it would be good to get the thoughts of the more "general" populace, who don't frequent the HOF board because they aren't interested so much in high scoring.

Ah, something to aspire to! I just won my first emperor game last night, perhaps one day I could make it. I think its a great idea. Who would manage it?

Some heroic volunteer would have to.

Given that I do most of my CFC'ing at work and have a pregnant wife at home, I can't really commit to the time required to do the validation and posting. I'm just throwing out the idea hoping someone will run with it.

Personally, I think this would generate a lot more play out there on Deity, given that it would give people the chance to hang their name on the wall "officially".

I think you can already include some of the elites. Aeson, Sir Pleb, Bamspeedy...

I fear the list would be too long. Come on, any decent player must have beaten deity by now.

Yep. Actually, anyone who already has a Deity HOF submission or won one of the Deity GOTM would automatically go on the list.

Have you?

This is exactly the reason I think it is a good idea. Posts that say "any decent player must have beated deity by now" sound exactly like the sort of thing that would be said by someone who has never even played Deity. I've played Deity, and I've never won. Because it's friggin' HARD. Even the players that regularly beat it will admit that.

Part of the reason for the HOF is that it puts smack in check. It will let people put their savegame where their mouth is, so to speak. And it will also give players who haven't tried it yet one more thing to strive for.

You could say that the HOF itself does that, but personally not everyone is a fan of milking. I have nothing against it, but win/loss is all that matters to many of us.

Re: Diety Winner Registry

Good idea! I have few things to add:

1. How do we treat a single game that qualify for multiple victory conditions? For example, if we open up Sir Pleb 's savegame at the HoF. The year was 2049 and he could win by the spaceship, UN, conquest, domination, and culture (all in the same game).

2. I think we should have columns for the map size, the total number of civs as well as the name of the human civ. And of course, the patch version of the game does also make a big different too.

It might be a little elitist, and you're going to be encouraging a lot of players to embark on a very frustrating, painstaking and intimidating task.

Make sure you can spell "Deity" correctly.

Elitist? You mean like the HOF, or GOTM, or the tournament, or anything else around here? You're right...we don't want anyone to get left out. Maybe we could have an "I'm planning to one day beat Deity Register".

And just to clarify...I strongly encourage EVERYBODY to at some point give Deity a try (regardless of the outcome of this thread). It's fun. It stretches your mind. It's a GAME, and it is OKAY to lose. Just make sure you can beat Regent first.

Thanks for the spelling correction....I think my hooked-on-phonics warranty has expired.

Just gave it Deity a try, got Shaka marching in my captial with his free Impis on like the 6th turn , clicked "quit game".

I'm just not cut out for this type of challenge.

I have played only a few games except for GOTM (IIRC one of them was deity level, too, and you can check my savegame) but they were all on emperor or deity, including Aeson's deity tundra start. I have yet to lose a game.

I don't think it's extremely hard but in all fairness, I've had some experience with Civ2 and other games and that helps.

However, there are really a lot of players on these forums who have a lot more experience than I have.

I've got a few deity wins under the belt Quite a few.

The problem most people have is that the give up to quickly.

I have posted a poll sometime ago to see why people give up. I will still post some simple strategies to do it. It's really not that difficult, but it is a sometimes a slow cumbersome process.

You need to understand the simple basics though...

Bah..I no longer consider beating deity a challenge, but that's only because I have done it quite a few times. I don't, however, play for big score games(it just isn't fun) so my saves are rather pathetic.

BTW, this'll be my last post until sunday....I'm on vacation starting NOW!

Well, I admit I just haven't given Deity a try, it seems friggin' hard, I mean, it must be a hell, with the AI starting with 15 extra units and everyone againts. you...Also, spending like 200 turns waiting for my moments really seems boring to me. I guess I'm just missing something about strategy, but it is also that I'm giving variants a try rather than going to Deity.

I consider myself a decent player and have yet to win at deity.

Ribannah...I don't want to turn this thread into an expose on your credentials, but I'm a little cranky this morning and I couldn't restrian myself from responding to this. It just doesn't ring true to me.

1. Never lost a game? Only play on emperor or deity? So you took the game out of the box, played the very first time on emperor/deity and never lost after that? Amazing.

2. I only see 1 GOTM that you have participated in. It was on Regent level. Was that an OCC victory (130th place)?

There are plenty people around here who have beaten deity...but few who would say they have "never lost a game", unless by that they mean they simply abandon a game before it is finished when it looks certain that they will lose.
