Renaming the Vikings

As many people would tell you, "Viking" is not a good name for the Civ. So I have decided to rename it, but I'm not sure to what:

1) Scandinavian Empire
2) Nordic Empire
3) Norse Empire
4) Other (specify, please!)
5) Just keep them the Vikings

for 2 and 3, however, i don't have a good short civ name for them (i.e; Germany, France, Japan). So if you vote 2 or 3, give me a good short name.

If you have another idea, that would be great too.

BTW, the Berserker will be renamed to "Viking".

That's the problem. The civ is a weird amalgam of the Nordic tribes. Probably should have been the Danes with Danish city names (Denmark having been the only "Imperial" scandinavian country).

But I'd think many people wouldn't recognize the "Danish" as a huge empire except history nuts. But then again, we're the kind of people that think they could have been the Hanseatic League.

It really depends on what time period the game is in. Since your keeping the UU as a similar berserker, calling them Danes would work.

I chose Scandinavia because that is what they were called in Civ III. Besides that Norse and Nordic have geographical connotations and you may play a game where they are in the south. I'd be against calling them the Danes mainly because not all Scandinavians or Norse are Danes, unless of course you want to edit the city list and stuff.

EDIT: Having said all of that, I'm leaving them as the Vikings in my own mod. But that is partially because I have modules for Sweden, Denmark, Norway etc.

I'd say 'Danes' only because 'Scandinavians' is too long to fit correctly on the selection screens.

Call them by there own name in old Norse: Víkingr. Seems to mean something like 'expeditioners'...

I would choose Scandinavia, but only as the civ's name. The Empire is the Viking Empire, and the demonym for it's people is the Vikings. THAT'S how Civ III did it.

I'd go with Scandinavia - it's the most general, and represents the region for its entire history.

I don't like the name 'Scandanavia' as its like lumping all the Native Americas, Aztecs, Incans, Mayans, and Ameria into one civ and labeling it 'New World'. Chose either Danes or Swedes.

Vikings (the term of the people in the "Berserker"-Era, like Roman, Holy Roman, Aztec...)

"Danes" is too short, it did not contain the Varangians and Norwegians
"Scandinavia" is too wide, it contains the Finns

The problem with Vikings is that that term is "incorrect" - so I've heard. I remember a long time on these forums in some thread we got into this Scandinavia vs. Vikings discussion. A guy from Iceland, I think, indicated that Scandinavia was better than Vikings. According to him, having a "viking civ" for Scandinavia is equivalent to having a "Cowboy Civ" for America.

All in all, however, it is just a name, so I guess it's best for the modder to decide...

Yeah, my original plan was to go with Norse/Nordic Empire as the long description, Scandinavia as the short, and Norse/Nordic as the adjective/demonym.
Also, I made a mistake in the poll wording: "Them the Vikings".

If it's between Norse and Nordic, go with Norse.

I don't think it is the same thing really, its similar, but not as bad as lumping together all of the Native American tribes. The Native American tribes were far less similar than the various Norse Kingdoms. Although I do get the point.

Now THAT, would be cool! Billy the Kid or Wyatt Earp for leaders!

OT: I voted for Norse. Scandinavians is too long, Vikings is wrong, Nordic is bleh, Norse is just cool.

Long or not then Scandinavians is by far the most broad ranging accurate name for the people and nations this civilization is intended to cover (namely Denmark, Sweden and Norway - and by a gentle stretch of historical association: Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands as well).

Also, imo then at the same time the Berserker unit should be renamed to Viking (which among other mean "sea raider") to keep the fear and focus of the Vikings in that era of the game.

The only non-Scandinavian nation that gets lumped in with them is the Finns, who are Finno-Urgic in descent, more closely related to early north russians than swedes. Iceland and Greenland (and Norway) were just Danish colonies.

If you wanted to REALLY do a quality mod, you'd remove Vikings as a civ and add Danes and Swedes separate.

... which is the debate I started a month or two ago.

I'd have to side with the Scandinavians on this one, but if there was a splitting option, I'd vouch for that.
