How to counter raging barbarians?
I usually play lan games with one of my friends but he always puts on raging barbarians and usually plays someone industrious. Is there a way to counter raging barbarians without building the great wall and being able to not fall behind everyone else? Take consideration that he will quit the game if he doesn't make the great wall, so I don't want to make it anymore.
I tried playing Mansa Musa because of his UU but... after a few turns i was at the bottom of the score chart and very behind in production that if anyone wanted to go to war with me, they would win very fast. Any idea which leader would be wise to choose? I usually like playing Julius Ceasar for the UB, UU, and his organized civic. |

I would explain to my friend that it's no fun to play with a baby who checks raging barbs and then quits if he doesn't get the great wall, i mean really, come on. You're not the AI, don't let him treat you like one.
On topic, i guess native america or babylon would be good at deflecting barbs, but spawnbusting as much as possible should make it doable with any leader..

But I agree with previous poster that your friend is whiner, quitting the game because he didn't build specific wonder

Early archery with a hard set spawn bust chain is the way to go. Barbs have 0 delay on entering culture once they swap in for the super-animals, so you have to get ready early. Realistically speaking, archery is probably what you beeline after 1 tech.
Other than that, don't play with such weak players. OR, force him to play emp+ where there is a very real chance the barbs kill him before he completes the wall .

Next time if you start close to each other and he completes the great wall pretend to be weak while building early rush units when he's busy building the great wall - they'll protect against barbs and gain experience before you capture his great wall city... all barbs in your territory will get instantly teleported to your borders and will go for his remaining cities. That'll teach him
![]() In the real world, the real Great Wall was touted as a sign of weakness on the part of previous Chinese dynasties by succeeding dynasties; such is the case with your friend in this game |

Wow I totally forgot that I could take his city and claim his wonder for myself. Yes I'm frustrated that he's a noob and a baby. I'd like to play against people online but last time I checked, no one spoke any English.
Anyways, thanks for the advice. |

If you are going to rush him, I would suggest using Darius. Yes, I know that Animal Husbandry is pretty expensive and horses are situational, but his UU is kick ass.
Alternatively, you can also go for Pacal (resourceless spearmen) or the zulu's, rapid attack spears, also good for hunting his workers .

Mali is actually very good because archers can be had fast, skirmishers will own any barb on defensive terrain, and if he's going speed gwall he isn't going archery and even a small #'s advantage in skirms can take down the warriors.

Of course on deity both players would be struggling just to stay alive, and the other player would likely be the least of their worries.

To only play with raging barbs, and quit when failing to procure GW is the most shameful behaviour.
It'd be fairly sad to do that against the AI, but a friend... wow. I suggest picking on your friend mercilessly until he mans up. |

Ooh... turn the tables on him! If he's gonna try to break the game with a wonder/setting combo, you should too. Play an archipelago map which has little land for barbs to spawn, then build the great lighthouse when he's building the great wall. The trade from the lighthouse can support an empire for as long as it needs to, and you'll have barb cities on other islands to conquer which is always nice (especially when they get the extra trade routes!)

Then again, if the guy insists on ragebarbs + gwall to the point of quitting on failure, it's virtually guaranteed he isn't that good. Get some archers out, put them in forests, on hills, or on hill forests (ideally, since this is a 125% bonus for them once fortified 5 turns) Even without hill forest, a fortified archer fights at 5.25 + first strike on defensive terrain. It will be a bit costly but get a good net of them out there on defensive tiles to cut into barb spawns and to kill a good chunk before they get close. Mali or any protective civ will work nicely. Even babylon's UU might see some use (archers will have well over 6 str on any defensive terrain and absolutely wreck everything but swords, which they will still usually beat). Skirmishers fight at 7 str once fortified, worth using also. Your opening will probably be worker + worker tech ----> archery, followed by spamming archers until you're at the growth cap.

I don't play multi-player but seams to me like you need Stting Bull. You start with great food techs, just research mining/BW for Dog Soldiers.

Raging barbs requires you to either build the GW or dump substantially more
into anti-barb units than the GW costs. Essentially he's demanding a half level advantage on you.Personally I say you play the Inca and just spam quecha and either smack him before he hits BW(AH)/Wheel or just take a few AI caps. Quecha are good until axes show up. Alternatively you can just steal his worker + pillage tiles to make him get hammered with the barbs. Other options for rushing would include: egypt (and I like hatty for cheap libs/border pops), mali, babylon, and Sumeria. |

I have an inkling that this bastard of a player is a quitter and a sore loser, so our man Addiction01 will end up without anyone to play with whatever strategy he uses to crush this guy. He'd probably be better off finding someone else to play against.
The bastard doesn't sound like much as a opponent either, as he's just a one trick pony with that dirty custom settings crap. I bet thats his only idea for winning, to let the barbarians take care of his human opponent. |

I guess depending on how the 2 players match up, this might not be such a bad thing. If he's overmatched he'd need something to make it fun, it'd just be alot better to come to your friend before the game and say "you play a few levels higher than me, do you mind if we play with rageing barbs on and i build the great wall?" If i were playing a friend who put it that way i would have no problem doing it. But if they're comparable skill players, then forget it; i'd just attacko him until he quits every time. Also, start keeping score, counting his quits as losses, it'll give you more trash to talk in real life too.
