The Classics- A List
So i would like everyones opinion on what they assume classics of literature to be. Stemming from my boredom last summer and inbetween law study i have been ploughing my way through them, some for the first time, some for a re-read. However, my stockpile is running low but my book vouchers are still there so i would like your ideas on where to go from here.
I appreciate that there is a 'what are you reading thread' but i would like to keep this solely to 'the classics' as it were. If you feel that there is some debate on whether it is a classic then just pop it in anyways. The only thing i ask is that there be a readily avaliable English translation and also under the assumption that I could only ever read one book per author, which do you believe is their greatest work. Here is what i've got through in the past few months, if i remeber i'll try and update this post to reflect any contributions. Dante- Divine Trilogy Chaucer- the Canterbury Tales Beowulf Cicero-on Government Plato- Republic Dostoyevsky- Crime and Punishment Homer- Illiad Homer- Odyssey Virgil- Aenid

Edmund Wilson's To the Finland Station is probably a pretty important read. Lots of history, but in an interesting way that highlights the personal, human side of the topics.

On what grounds? Antisemitism? Racism? Egomania? Retardedness?
--- Impressive listings so far, BTW. (Though I'd like to note that Nietzsche's Will to Power was composed from left over writings after his death.)

Its very pertinent prurient picture of the path to power and the personality required to pursue it.

That being the only thing Hitler could be prurient about. Being asexual and all.

Wow! yep might take a bit of time to get through, especially considering i already have to read the equivalent of 7 books a week. Any recommendations of just one book from each author? (pretend i coud only ever read one of their books)

Don't forget that Tolstoy's best work are not his massive novels. So if you want to read some Tolstoy but don't feel like diving into a 493969349629436 page novel, try his short stories/novellas. The Death of Ivan Ilych, The Kreutzer Sonata, and The Hadji Murad are Fifty's favorites.

I've edited the first post slightly to reflect my desire to work under the assumption that i could only ever read one book per author. Not that i don't appreciate your list Bill, i'll certainly start picking books at random from there!
Which one would you recommend the most fifty?

I never thought I'd read a girlyauthor like Jane Austin, but marriage is a series of compromises. And surprise! I've found my innersissy. The Bennets crack me up (P&P). My wife also makes me watch things like Places in the Heart and Steel Magnolias. But I've tricked her into Dune, The Keep and Highlander.
Sorry, this is about classic literature, right? I'd like to mention On the Origin of Species, by Charles Darwin.
