Where Do We Place Our NE City? - Turn 50

Location 1- Yellow - (On Deer) - Will give 5 Deer (+1 Deer in the city), 5 Fur, 1 Sheep, and 1 Silver

Location 2 - Red - (On Fur) - Will give 5 Deer, 3 Fur (+1 Fur in the city), and 1 Sheep

Please Note that this poll is not to decide where our NEXT city will go. It is to decide where our NE City will go, when we build it. We have to decide this because Bob is currently moving to pre-chop the city site so that we dont lose the . Bob needs to know where the city will go, so he knows where to chop.

We will have another poll to decide whether we build on Diana's Island next or whether we put our next city on Jennilund.

Just keep in mind while deciding where you want your cities that we can't choose Location 1 for this city and Location and Location 2 for the other city because they will be too close together. Any other combination will work.

Good Point SilCon... and that brings up another. IMO, in the NE poll, Site 2(Red) is clearly inferior because it has less resources AND it has 9 water tiles (compared to 6 for site 1)... Also, sites 1 and 2 have the same amount of food, so there is no benefit whatsoever to sacrificing Furs, and access to Silver. By overlapping Silver especially, we ensure that Silver will always be worked, even while other cities work cottages, etc. So site 1(Yellow) seems to easily be the best choice.

However...

We can't build on Site 1 here AND on site 2 for the NW city. It has to be either...
NE =1, NW=1
NE=2, NW=2
or
NE=2, NW=1

As SilCon points out, we can't go with NE=1, NW=2, because the cities would be too close. Site 2(Green) is arguably better than site 1(Orange) in the NW poll, so what we are facing is whether we want the better city for our NW city, or our NE city. We can't have both. What we Should definitely NOT do, is pick NE=2 and NW=1, because that would arguably be the worse site for BOTH cities.

While I would rather settle on a Fur than a Deer. I think I'd have to pick spot 1 here because spot two just has too much water (including 2 Ocean tiles!). This forces me to pick spot 1 with the other city, but in my opinion spot 2 for this city (NE) is the weakest. I'd rather have a city that can share cottage tiles with the capitol.

Does anyone think that not settling on the Deer is worth those extra water tiles? I know settling on the deer brings another deer inside the BFC, but this deer is shared and if it added to one it is taken from the other. Eventually it will mean we have 1 less deer worked total. I am having a hard time, however, justifying those ocean tiles.

I like spot 2. The extra water tiles is not a huge deal.

Our home island only has so many land tiles. Our 2 northern cities will share these tiles. Any combination of city sites that covers every land tile on the island is just as good as any other combination. Picking sites with less water tiles really just means we have more overlap between our two northern cities.

For this reason picking a “stronger” city site with less water really just equals more overlap and makes the 2n city site weaker. In the long term it might be better to have one super city and one weaker more marginal city. But in the short/medium turn the cities will not be that large anyway and I think it would be better to have 2 fairly good cities.

In my view I am all for maxing out the coverage of water tiles as it is the best way to minimize overlap of land tiles between our 2 northern cities. This will give us the max overall coverage of tiles – even if some of those are less than desirable. But I would rather have access to an ocean tile than nothing.

@ damnrunner: that's the good argument I was looking for. Thank you.

@ loev: It doesn't have many unique tiles to use, but that's doesn't mean it doesn't have many tiles to use. They'll have to share. But I agree with damnrunner that minimizing overlap is probably the best.
