Wishin for A Demo

Im jus wondering why and if they will make a demo? Because if there was a demo, it would take the edge off of players who are really wanting to play this game. Also it would give an idea of how the game would run on people's computers so they would know if they need to get a new computer for the game.

A demo will probably only be available close to the launch date, 2-4 weeks in advance at the most. First, because the demo is just the shipping version of the game with a lot of the options stripped out (in Civ's case only 1 or 2 civs and a limited number of turns), and second, because the effort that is invested in a demo should translate into a momentum enthusiasm for the game that should result in sales. And even though you can pre-order the game well in advance, a lot of people wait until they can actually buy it, so you would waste part of the effort if you release a demo too far in advance of the release date.

If I remember correctly, Civilization demos have always arrived _after_ the initial release of the game. I could be wrong, though, but that's how I remember it.

If there have ever been demos at all, that is...

Steam occasionally promotes games by allowing them to be downloaded freely for a limited period. I can't recall them doing it prior to or coinciding with the release date, however.

really hoping for a demo, although it will be good to see how well you can run it and if you like it, a demo won't really help those people who have already pre-ordered.

Here I quote CanuckSoldier from the 2K forums:

"During the 100th Polycast, Dennis Shirk and Barry Claudil did announce that
there will be a demo before release.

Date not released."

EDIT:
can anybody else confirm this?

I'd say they have one ready for the 250,000 visitors to GamesCom, 18-22 August.
