Advice on starting BO

What would you do, if placed in such a marvellous position?
This is prince difficulty, playing Pericles of Greeks, epic speed, huge map.

Wuold it be better to...

1.
a. 2 workboats -> worker -> warrior -> settler
b. 2 workboats - > 2 workers -> warrior/archer -> settler (working 2 seafood should make me quite advanced till 1st settler)

Tech path either
- Archery-AH-AG-Mining-BW
- Mining-BW-AH-AG (to chop the second worker and a military unit)

2. Do the standart worker -> warriors -> settler while researching AG->AH and foregoing clam for a while

Wow. Are you sure you didn't WB?

I'd choose the option that compliments who your neighboors are.
  • If you are isolated, workerboats for commerence.
  • If placed near a REX'er, do the standard worker first combo.

Coastal starts are slow in REX'ing powress, but thier commerence is huge. As you have both (Coastal and Land, which has enough reasorces for 2 capitals.) either option is completely via-able.
If you get a high enough population, you can REX like mad then, and leap like a Gazell towards your destiny.

No, it`s not WB`ed. The map is partly revealed, because I popped a hut on 1st turn with a scout. I do not know, whetther I`m isolated. It`s a tectonics map.

Clams are only 4

Corn and cow(5 and 42) are the most important tiles.

True, but I can get clams operational in 16 turns, while corn in 30 and cow in 28 (and then spend 3 turns travelling to the corn).

On the other hand, 2 starting workboats are going to be spent, while a worker has 3 resources to improve and will be ready to help with the 2nd city.

I think worker first because can keep improving, while your workboat is just sitting there.

I'm not a strong player by any means, but consider this: each tile costs you 2 food to work, so a 5-food tile isn't 25% better than a 4-food tile, it's 50% better. Worker first is absolutely the right call here--your city will be up and running much faster.

Ugh - I don't know the timings of Epic speed very well.

But my instinct is that you'll be better of with Worker first for a few reasons.

1) You don't have a good tile in your inner ring. Maxing out on boats usually means having a 3 tile or having a 3 tile that you can use to rush to pop:2. Instead you are trapped in a middle. When the borders pop you'll be somewhere between 16 / 16 and 8 / 24

2) The extra move on the clams is a minus.

3) the adjacent corns are a plus on the worker side (I'm not very convinced by this one, because of the trees in the way).

Which isn't to say that boats first isn't right - just that there are factors leading me to guess that the calculation will be unfavorable.

I'd go ag> mining> BW> ah. 2 corns is all the food you'll need for a while, and going AH after ag will leave your worker standing around for a long time, plus you want slavery ASAP to use that food. I almost always avoid WB-first if there's other food available. You can chop out a couple of WBs once BW is done - I'd even build some warriors after the worker.

There's no question worker first is better.

You have to ask yourself, is it really necessary to get some tech 4-10 turns earlier? At the cost of (5-4) x 2 food + 2 food + 2 hammers for however many turns.

If you can still expand, there's no need for libraries or granaries.

Worker first. Corn > Clams. Why in the sake of all that is holy would you tech Archery?

I don`t think, I would need slavery right away - what would I use it for? Warriors? I thought, that whipping workers/settlers is counterproductive (since they take food to produce anyway), or am I wrong?

Plus, after farming corn, my worker won`t have anything to do either. I will farm both corns ~40 turn. Getting AG, Mining adn BW is like 60 turns if my math is right.

This is raging barbs, huge map. They will come and I don`t particularly like gambling on warrior vs warrior encounters. I`m not going to get any strategic resource in the BFC.

Ok, thank you guys So worker first I shall go...

Whipping settlers is the best way to get them IMO. You don't need to stagnate your city to build the settlers if you can whip them out in one turn especially in this city with abundant food resources.

I'd whip one out every 11 turns

Well, the numbers doesn't support this. The only case where I've found whipping sans a granary better is imperialistic with high food, and almost no hammer sources (i.e. you can't convert much food to hammers via tiles). Even a forested plains hill or worse a mine tend to make it inefficient.

Maybe it is not the best way but a city which has 5 food resources in it's BFC is a dream for whipping, again imo.

But you only have 5 happiness, so if you whip, you can't work one of those food resources for 10 turns. Food makes you grow fast, but it also builds settlers fast, too.
