Play on a high level with raging barbs. They will ransom your city pretty quickly. Don't fight back.

well it took several tries, they were too stupid to use all 3 archers at once, and then other civ's killed them off...

2nd try i got DoW by bismarck after ten turns

3rd time it finaly worked, i founded a second city on an open field to make it more attractive

also got the turtle boat- iron clad achievement thanks to the tip here

I finally got the sink 357 boats as Elizabeth. I will miss those upgraded longbows from highly promoted scouts though, but at least I can stop playing as her for a while.

Any tips on getting the Paul Bunyon Achievement. Its taking forever. The catch is I still want to try to win each game, so I dont want to just start as Hiawatha and clear cut everything. Any suggestions to speed up the achievement while still trying to win games?

I, for one, just totally forgot about going after the achievements after the achievements database log quit working (way back when). Then one game the Paul Bunyon achievement just "popped." I still don't know if you have to actually tell your worker to chop the forest, or if it counts to just build a farm or mine on a forested tile.

I just found something funny in the debug file - the code name for the Barbarian ransom city achievement:

[3956.934] DBG: 118 (L): ACHIEVEMENT_REALLY_SUCK (He Threw a Car at My Head!) = Locked

The way I got this one was brute force...:

1) load up an old save with tons of forest, build about 20 workers
2) put each one on a forest tile then save
3) issue 20 chop orders (rapid fire alt-c)
4) reload and repeat 3)

The reloaded chops will count as much as any other, so this way gets one chop about every two seconds (plus loading time). After repeating 4) < 50 times the achievement will pop!

Edit- ah. Well, the liberty track and Pyramids will speed up chop times to 2 (maybe 1) turn. Building improvements on tiles also count (prior to cheesing this, this was how I got the first hundred or so I had). Going for large pangeas, with low sea levels will maximise land / forests. Playing quick speed games will speed development too (as would starting in later ages).

Perhaps nukes might also help...

Congrats! I wonder how many of us there are in total - and what proportion of those have used this thread to get there...

I'm not normally one to chase carrots people put out for me, but I think the steam achievements are a pretty cool idea. As a result of chasing achievements, I've been trying many different things and playing outside my normal rinse and repeat conquest strategy. Gaining a better understanding of strategy and the underlying game mechanics along the way.

Good stuff.

*fake edit* I have no idea how you guys are able to get all 176 or whatever achievements without devoting your lives to civ. Very impressive!

I'm sure I could find this some where else on the internet if I tried but how do I check the log files to see my achievement progress?

Edit: Wait no I found it

I was thinking of starting a duel pangeae with rome, and as opponent egypt, to get two achievements: zeupiter (capture the statue of zeus as rome) and tomb raider (pillage from a city with a burial tomb)

now offcours low difficulty to get it over quickly (so chieftain probably). how sure can i be that they will build the two buildings required? or is it best to build the statue in a city and gift it to them? will the temple change to a burial tomb when you give a city?

I think you can be pretty sure they're going to build a burial tomb. But on low difficulty, it's going to be unsure if they ever build the statue of Zeus. But I guess that maybe you can gift it to them.

it was the other way around. they build lots of wonders, including the statue of zeus (which i deliberatly didnt build) and the oracle (which i was close to completing). after a while i attacked them and conquered them, but they didnt have a burial tomb. and because they only had one city it was end of game immediatly.

im gonna reload this evening again and wait a bit longer before i attack, maybe then they will have build it

Thanks, this worked like a charm.

Does anyone know whether taking the Genghis Khan achievement in the Mongol scenario also make you get the lesser ones (Kublai, Supreme and Great Khan)? It does say "Win on King/Emperor/Immortal or harder difficulty"..

Where is it? Does it say how many temples/chopped woods etc. you have left?

edit: Forget it. Found it myself. Is this possible to edit btw?

edit: Hmm.. It doesn't seem to update. I tried an experiment and purchased a tile, but nothing happened with the number (618) even though I exited the game and then Steam. Can anyone confirm how this works and is updated?
