Civ5 in 64-bit

Hi all.

My laptop currently has 32bit Vista installed, but I was told when I bought it that the 64bit version of the OS was on the HD for when I wanted to update it.

My question is, will it give a performance boost to Civ5? It runs a bit choppy as is, probably because of the ATI 3100 card, but is kinda playable. If it was in 64bit, would it run any better?

I guess it would let me use all 4g of RAM... any ideas?

It isn't worth the hazzle of a windows reinstallation. There is not 64bit .exe anyway, and it would have no (positive) effect on the graphics performance.

If you get a new laptop, i would recommend the 64bit version, though.

Windows7 64bit

I am currently experiencing the issues i've read above about the directory "c:\Users\cheesegoblin\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization V" is not created. There are no configuration files outside of my steam directory. When i attempt to launch the game via steam I receive the window that asks if i want to play Civilization V or (Directx 9).
When I attempt to run the game through directx 10/11 the game launches and the process is killed immediately with a directx 11 crash report generated in the steam app civ directory. I have those saved if you'd like them.
When I attempt to launch the directx 9 version via steam it will put me to the Civilization V Launch chooser for DX9/10/11 and when i click 10/11 please see above section. When I choose 9 the exe launches and sits in the process window until terminated. (Somehow i have 40 hours of civ and have never seen a window open) I am at a loss to how i could have missed that.
Taking into consideration that the game is installed in the steamapp directory i attempted to run the exe right from there and no change though now sometimes the dx9 will launch me back to the chooser unlimited times.
I did some poking around on the net and found that there could be a compatibility setting and disabled it. No change.
I tried reinstalling the dx from the steam dir, windows update, directx site, and tried to reinstall the c++ redist packs with no change in the situation. The game will not create this directory and civ will not launch to where i can actually do something. I have reinstalled the game 9-13 times now and have selected my charity just as many times. I've been tempted to install through steam though i bought the dvd for a reason right?
I looked on civfanatics to see if there was anything else out there and the solutions had no bear to this situation. I have posted below the Dxdiag and errors i found in the event log. In a last ditch effort i attempted a system file scan with sfc to see if there were any violations of integrity and none were present.

dxdiax stuff and notes:
--------------------------------------

civ directx diag stuff.txt

---------------------------------

So i've owned the game for three days and have had zero luck in playing a game. I'm not sure i've spent this much time on any other game just to try to get it to work. Honestly, this just reminds me why i stopped playing pc games... I only buy a few if any ever and civ was always one that made me want to keep my pc. I sure hope this is worth all the trouble that it has caused.

Unless Civ tries to use more than 2GB, no it won't. And if it did, you would only get the benefit that it would work without crashing, not running faster

Wrong thread, but here we go: Your computer will not be able to run the DX10/11 mode, as your graphics "card" does not support that. And even for the DX9 mode, it is WAY below the minimum requrements. I suggest a new video card, anything you could buy new now will be able to run Civ5. I suggest to get a DX11 card, though, as apparently DX9 and DX10 cards work not all that well with Civ5.

I noticed that while i was combing through the information though now i have it installed and it will run in dx9 but nothing actually launches for me to use. the process runs in the the proc list but nothing comes up. there is also no game settings in my games under windows 7 which i find even stranger\

i think i'd be pressed for a dx11 card for pci express x16

sorry about the wrong thread thing i'll keep searching
