Germany makes final 59 million Euro payment to UN ending WW1 repatriations

I was amazed to read today that come 03/10/10 , Germany will finally pay off its Versailles treaty debt 92 years later !!

I am computer illiterate so can`t provide the link but I found this fact mind blowing !

What would've happened if Germany didn't make the payments? Would the UN have filed foreclosure and then put Germany back on the market?

Nah, the mighty West would just have invaded again. USA #1!

Why are they even still paying reparations? Hitler denounced Versailles and the Weimar Republic had stopped paying the reparations even before that. No-one seemed terribly bothered by it either. Odd. I'd never heard of them paying the Versailles debt.

found a couple of links...
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news...677121&ref=rss

Germany is paying back long term bonds (capital + interested) that were issued long time ago, not really the debt itself (not the first time that journalists tend to mis-report this type of news).

Quote:
This Sunday, Berlin will pay the last interest instalment on foreign bonds issued in 1924 and 1930 to cover the huge reparations demands made by the victorious First World War Allies.

Quote:
Germany suspended payments during the Great Depression and Hitler refused to continue them when he came to power in 1933. But, in 1953, West Germany agreed to honour its Great War reparation obligations. Communist East Germany, however, declined.

It was agreed that Germany should be allowed to wait until it was reunited before paying some 125 million euros in outstanding interest on foreign debt accrued after 1945. The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 followed by Germany's reunification less than a year later fulfilled the conditions of the agreement.

Well, I knew we did at the time. I didn't know we were still holding them to that after the whole '39-'45 thing. I thought we would have re-evaluated the situation.

Just to clarify, they aren't paying the war reparations, they are paying off the loans they took out to pay for the reparations.

"Sunday's sum is the final payment on interest accrued between 1945 and 1952 on foreign bonds the German government had issued between the two world wars to raise capital for Treaty of Versailles payments.

The money Germany pays on Sunday will therefore actually go to private investors who own these bonds."

And further:

"This payment is something of a leftover, West Germany having made a settlement of national debts in the 1953 London Agreement on German External Debts which it finished paying off in 1983. There was however some further debt that, it was agreed, could only be owed by a unitary Germany state, and so would be repaid over twenty years should reunification ever occur. This weekend is the twentieth anniversary."

Will the reunification ever stop to cost us money?

Illiterate yeah: that should read reparations, ofcourse.

Some more corrections are in order:

Unlike Japan (which never acknowledged any guilt towards its war victims) German reparations have been underway since the Social-Democratic Brandt government I believe. (The Christian-Democrats have long been opposed to such - indeed harbouring some irredentists - and not wanting to acknowledge the Eastern frontier agreements.)

And ofcourse Allied war crimes were never officially acknowledged...
