Annoying ptw issue

If anyone else has this problem, please tell me about it, so I don't feel like I'm the only one.

I can run ptw just fine, and far more graphically intense games as well, but if I run the game, then exit it, then try to open it again (like when I'm playtesting stuff) it will do 1 of 2 annoying things.

Firstly: it gives me a message whenever I try to open anything else, even an empty folder, that "there is not enough memory to run this application, please close one or more running programs."

Secondly: my cd-rom drive will just spin, and the fan will go really quickly, and then it will stop, like it can't read the cd.

Again, my system is not state of the art, but it should be able to handle civ3ptw, since it runs games like empire earth, and return to castle wolfenstein, and age of mythology just fine, without any slowdown or me changing the graphics settings or anything. So why does ptw cause such a HUGE drain on my system resources? Is it just me?

Civ3 and PTW cause huge drain on system resources because they're shoddily coded and eat up the swap file.

Zulu is right, alot of memory/swap file is used for this game. Adding memory is a big improvement and you may want to check your swap file settings. Civ3 is a hugh resource hog.

I have that happen here if I run Civ3 a few times, or install 3 compilers at once. (C++, VC++, VBASIC).

Incidentally, how does one check the swap file settings?

I suspect much of your woes will be coming from the Operating System bogeyman I love to talk about

When I ran Windows Millenium Edition with PTW/Civ3 too had memory problems when running many programs, the game and the editor despite having 512 MB of Rambus RAM and MPower RAM manager!

Now that I have Windows XP Home Edition such problems are a thing of the past

Control Panel -> System -> Performance Tab -> Virtual memory button

I have a 160 GB HD (dont ask Y I went so big), so I could but a few gigs to the swap file. Any suggestions on what it should be?

Control Panel\System\Advanced. Or something like that. I forget exactly for 98, but that's where it is in XP and the two are very similar in that area.

I was once told that a good bet is double your RAM if you're low on memory. Or you could just leave it alone and let Windows decide. You don't need to set anything, it will take care of itself.

I have XP Pro and almost all of my problems are a thing of the past! And I haven't had to reinstall anything for months now. It's great!
