Saw The Third Man. Decent, and I liked the music.

You know, if Joss Whedon wasn't an atheist, I think he'd be up for Canonization for pulling off a miracle with the Avengers.

The Avengers was ok, certainly better than Iron Man or Captain America, but I don't think really lives up to all the hype it is getting. (Granted, I suppose it might be somewhat better in theaters than in the low quality bootleg version watched streaming online a few hours ago.)

Surely some dispensation can be given to canonize atheists who are still alive.

Yeah, it's definitely better in theaters. The action and effects were spectacular. Viewing it as a stand-alone film, it might not be as exponentially better than the other Marvel movies as it seems to be to me right now, but there's so much more that can go wrong with The Avengers than could with your typical superhero origin.

I watched in full 3D and I still agree with your post. As with quite a few of the superhero movies, the film focused too much on the superheroes and neglected putting on an interesting villain. It's basically just Thor: Round 2 in that department.

I watched Redline (2009). a trailer..

Very purty visually. The first 1/2 - 2/3 of the movie was really awesome imo.
Spoiler:
I'm not a fan of the final race/roboworld stuff. Once the race started it was confusing to follow the action/the fat boy was confusing/etc. Plus a bit laughable how invincible they all are (as in the racers crash and are fine physically). I'm fine with the cars being pretty uber strong and all, but some of it was just too over-the-top.

The yellow line race and build up to the start of the final race is quite good IMO, as well as pre-finally interactions between JP and Sonoshee. The end was just kind of rushed.

Avengers never get good villains. Actually, scratch that, Super Teams never get good villains, except for the X-Men.

TBH, I thought Loki was a pretty decent villain in Thor, even though he's essentially just a whiny little brat - at least there's some kind of actual characterisation. Simply re-using him in Avengers Assemble and adding little else except an alien army under his command is just lazy, though.

EDIT: Nevermind, the fact that you said "Super Teams" failed to register. Then again, didn't Thor have a team of god-like beings?

Fantastic Four has a decent selection, debuting Dr. Doom and Galactus. I also liked Dragon Man and Diablo as a kid, but I'm not sure how cool they'd seem at this point.

One aspect of the Avengers villain choice that annoys me is that they used the Chitauri as alien invaders but didn't incorporate shape-changing at all. There are plenty of more generic species that could be used, so it's odd that they chose one with a unique powerset. Of course, if you want a species with a unique powerset, go for the real deal rather than an Ultimate Universe knock-off. So there's really no scenario where the Chitauri don't seem like a suboptimal villain choice. Again, kind of a nitpick.

Eh, those weren't the Chitauri. The rights to using them in movies were bundled with the Fantastic Four franchise.

Last I heard Marvel could use the Skrulls but only Fox could use the Super-Skrull (another pretty cool FF villain).

They need to reacquire the Fantastic Four franchise. I mean, we've had to live through endless batman reboots and now a Spiderman reboot. I think I can survive through one more.

Just saw Man of La Mancha. Gah, it was awful. It was like being bludgeoned to death with a barber's basin. It saddens me to see how the mighty Peter O'Toole and Sophia Loren had fallen.

I think if any super heroes need a reboot, it's the Fantastic Four. I don't think the movies were as bad as some people said, but I agree that Dr. Doom and Galactus weren't portrayed very well in the movies. Give the Marvel films a great Doom and maybe we can get a badass villain worthy enough to face the Avengers.

The enemy shown during the post-credits sequence of The Avengers is much more of a worthy foe than Doom.

I was okay with them reusing a villain. Getting the team together and everything else was enough. Trying to fit in a super villain origin story would have been pushing it. I am excited for
Spoiler:
Thanos
in a sequel though, especially if they are in possession of
Spoiler:
the infinity gauntlet.
