SGOTM 13 - T'dr'duzk b'hazg t't

I'm going to step in and ask Neil to take over, as six days is too long, and we've already been held up once before. Sorry for not noticing sooner.

I see your point. We are also halfway through the time allowed, and we've only played 5 or 6 turnsets.

We could PM ParadigmShifter and let him know he's up.

edit: never mind, x-post with Brian

My thoughts on our current situation:

Paris:

I started Moai, realized the plan was Library and Monument first, switched to Library, and now that I think about it realize that it would be a good opportunity to use whip overflow into Moai while we get the Marble hooked up for doing the GL.

Agreed. It is growing to size 7 next turn, and can 2 pop whip a library this turn with the overflow going into Moai (nicely done drlake): WHIP!

Orleans:

Not the best place to be building the worker, but it can mine the hill S of Lyons, while our Galley picks up the worker from xxxx and hauls it down to Chartres.

Then maybe a monument for the happiness boost and grow to run scientists and work coastal tiles?

Lyons:

Working on what I anticipate will be the last Trireme from Lyons for a while.

This is one of our better production sites, so I would build a forge after trireme while the worker mines the grass hill.

Rheims:

I figure its time to start running scientists as the population here increases, especially with the work boats going out.

I think we should build a settler for the marble site after the WB gets the other clams hooked up.

Tours:

Pumping work boats for other cities, this one is for Marseilles.

Needs a granary and monument after the WBs.

Marseilles:

Once the hill is mined, the worker will be free to relocate to help Chartres out. The Galley should arrive by then. I went with the Monument as the fastest way to get a border pop for the other Clam, plus the happiness is nice.

Yep, then granary and forge. And maybe a barracks.

I would vote for one more city to grab the marble for the GL. The yellow spot on drlake's dot map (SW of the marble) looks good to me. I think the next turnset will be about building up our infrastructure. After that we probably want to start focusing on units. Macemen, most likely. We should see if we can get Construction off Cathy.

@Trystero
Sounds good to me. I was thinking today about doing a Settler at Rheims for the Marble, before worrying about running specs. The Forge at Lyons sounds like a good plan, too.

Hi guys,

Sorry I haven't been more active, I am currently putting my feet up on a tiny island in Fiji, just a few miles from Tom Hanks island in Castaway. They only have dial-up, and I have to share that! I can play the game, but I won't be able to upload any images :)

Plans sound good, don't worry, I won't do anything rash.

Perhaps you didn't read the fine print in the team charter. You can't go on vacation to a tropical island during SGs unless you agree to take the entire team with you. :deal:

Thats why I didn't tell you guys

I haven't been able to play yet (my wife gave me death looks when I suggested it) and today is our last day here. Tomorrow will be spent flying.

So, I can play in another few days, if you want to wait. Otherwise I can swap with whoever is next. Sorry guys.

edit: I had a decent look at the save, and gold city can whip the WB this turn, and copper city whip its WB next turn, along with the lib in Paris.

I'm not sure about Music, but since it is only 8 turns away we may as well finish it. Then CS, Machinery & Construction IMO.

Sorry Trystero, I wasn't trying to second guess your plan :)

Lets switch, you play now, and I can go next.

Sorry Trystero, I wasn't trying to second guess your plan :)

Oh yeah, I realized that. Sorry if that wasn't clear. I just meant that I'm familiar with what's going on, so I'm comfortable switching.

And, please, second guess me. :)

Lets switch, you play now, and I can go next.

OK - I'll play after I get some sleep.

Sorry, busy all the same, baby due in 2 months, and house renovation still in progress. I wish my hold ups were as glamorous...

I agree with the plan.
And also on the necessity to hurry up a bit. Let's keep turnsets flowing, and possibly make them a bit longer.

Given that we're on epic speed and haven't been running turn sets very quickly, it does seem like it might be a good idea to extend the turn sets.

Sorry, busy all the same, baby due in 2 months, and house renovation still in progress. I wish my hold ups were as glamorous...

But your hold-ups are real. Baby on the way and house renovations are not easy.

Is the baby your first?

ps. I'm happy to do longer turnsets. I just got home, kids collapsed into bed, I think I will follow.

Turnset: t180-t208

Since not much was happening (well, a little more than "not much" unfortunately) I played a longer turnset.

The good: Moai and the Great Library finished in Paris. We beat out Joao for the GLib.

The bad: We are at war with Willem and lost Chartres (the Western rice city).

We were the first to Music, and researched CS. We are 3 turns from Machinery and maces.

I decided to stop after the GLib was done to discuss how to proceed. We founded the marble city (Avignon) in the discussed location. 5 turns into the set Joao researched Lit and built the Parthenon. Even though the marble was not hooked up yet, I decided to prioritize the GLib in Paris. I used the Great Artist from Music for a GA to hurry the GLib and switch civics to Bureaucracy. I did not switch into OR, since we still have no religion, and I didn't see the point of paying upkeep for no benefit.

One thing I overlooked in my plan, and did not notice until several turns into the set, was that several of our new cities were not garrisoned. I built warriors in Paris after Moai for MP and garrison duty. Unfortunately I did not prioritize getting warriors to our border cities over moving workers to hook up the marble. This was a mistake. Willem declared and landed 4 spears and 2 axes at Chartres. It's unlikely a single warrior would have been much deterrent, but it was stupid of me to leave the city undefended that long.

Screenshots to follow shortly in the next post.

Not many trading opportunities during this set. Hunting, HBR, and Theology were the only techs the AI wanted to trade. And we don't really need those. I got lots of offers like this:

I refused this:

...but later sold it to her to fund research (Vicky was 2 turns from finishing it herself)

Here is Willem's stack at Chartres:

And here is an overview of our empire:

Spoiler :

Paris:

We just finished the GLib. I put a barracks in the queue (while we wait for CS and maces), but no hammers have been committed. Once we get Machinery we should switch to nothing but maces (and cats with Construction).

The workers are building a workshop on the grassland tile, since I thought we needed hammers more than commerce at this point.

The GP born this turn was another Great Prophet. I would probably settle or save for another GA.

Spoiler :

Orleans:

Running scientists for a GS and building another galley for transporting troops.

Spoiler :

Lyons:

I started building units here. I built a forge, and mined the grass hill and built a workshop on the grassland tile. I realized after I finished the swordsman that I should have waited for CS to build a mace. The warrior is for MP duty.

Spoiler :

Rheims:

Hooked all the clams, and building a granary. The next 2 pop should be assigned as scientists, I think.

Spoiler :

Tours:

Built WBs. Now working on a monument.

Spoiler :

Marseilles:

Clams hooked up and hill mined, and is working on a forge. It should switch to building troops after that.

Spoiler :

Avignon:

Marble and clams hooked up. The monument was whipped, and it is now building a granary.

Top cities/Wonders:

We definitely need to focus on military. Our power ranking is horrid. Also, Joao is becoming a monster (11 cities! edit: make that 12!).

Ouch! Well, not a disaster by any means, but losing Chartres does hurt.

I tend to prioritize defenders at bit more than some of you seem to, but I still get caught off guard by AI DoWs, especially on Archipelago maps. Hopefully this is one we can recover from.

I usually never send a settler out without a defender, so it didn't occur to me immediately to check if cities were defended. I was probably also distracted by the GLib race with Joao. I don't understand what provoked the DOW though. He made no demands prior to it. Perhaps it was just an attack of opportunity?

Heh, when I took over I think only 2 of our cities had garrisons! I partially rectified that during my turn, but in the interest of getting the cities settled I neglected sending along some troops. Of course, as you note, it probably wouldn't have mattered in this case. I don't recall anything happening on my turn that would explain the DoW.

Ragnar looks a bit beliggerant, maybe we could bribe him?

Pity about Chartres, but we'll recover and stomp those AIs.
