When you buy a Civ & Scenario DLC...

What's the first thing you do? Play as the civ, play against the civ, or play the scenario?

I fire up the scenario first thing, always.

It's what I'll be doing tomorrow when I get home from work

Play against the new civ, just to get a view of how they deal with things

I play the scenario because it's tailored for that civ. I will only play the scenario once or twice though. The scenario is static and boring after only a few games, so I rarely play it again. I quickly go back to the normal game which has a lot more variety (random maps, civs, more gameplay options). By the way, I'm talking about Mongolia here because I'm saving my extra money for other games right now.

I start a game, not specifically to play against the Civ, but to essentially see the Civ in the game (especially just make contact and see the production value of the leader artwork and sound recordings).

Play against them typically. I still haven't even played as the Inca yet.

I usually wait on the scenarios. I've played through the mongol one and I've tried to start a New World and Polynesian one but I haven't really gotten into it.

Well, so far the poll agrees with me even if the posters don't I always play as the new civ first, as that's the part that interests me - going crazy with their special abilities and units (even if it means a less focused and ultimately losing strategy). After that, the newest civs always seem to be picked first in a list of random leaders, so I never have a problem finding a new civ in my later games to see how they play.

I often only end up playing the scenario when I'm bored of regular civ for a while, or when I want more achievements, or waiting for a new patch to come out. I usually forget that it exists, which is probably bad.

I always fire up the scenario to look for extra stuff like changed rules, special abilities, technologies, units etc.

The latest DLC for instance has the Huscarl unit which doesn't appear in the normal game

I play against the new civ in a small map, just to hear the language first.

And then you tell your glorious story on civfanatics of course.

I miss the option 'play the game normally and do not do nothing special.'

Against the new civ. I have not even played any scenarios yet. I go straight into picking a map against AI players and explore interacting with all the civs. It's like picking Skirmish mode in a Real Time Strategy game. Or deathmatch in a first person shooter. I just dive in and play without too many rules or restrictions. I think I do it for the randomness of it all. Seems to increase replay value for me.

fastest way to learn the workings of a new civ is to use it so that's the general approach i'd take

I play as the new civ and against the new civ at the same time. On a duel map, and in the case of Denmark, it will be small continents.
