Post Age of Empires

While this maybe the entirely wrong forum to ask this question, and might possibly be "speaking of the enemy"....my question is....

As I enjoy Civ, will I enjoy Age of Empires, as I have been tempted to spend some of that hard earned cash on Age of Empires II.

Any comments/help are much appreciated.

It has nothing to do with a strategy game. Like Starcraft, rather a clik-clik game... For stupid people (those who own a console for instance )

Hmmm

1 for...2 against so far...I am interested to know as many peoples opinions as poss, so post away!

If Age of Empires is not all it is cracked up to be, what would people recommend instead. You can only play Civ for so long before you need a change of scene!

As someone who routinely gets his *** kicked online in AOE, I feel I am somewhat of a subject matter expert on this game. I've logged quite a few hours in on this game and wondered exactly why I keep playing it. I'll break it down like this:

Positives: Good graphics, exciting gameplay, different Civs to choose from with different characteristics. Decent battlefield control.

Negatives: TOO MUCH MICROMANAGING!!! The only strategy worth playing is to build as many villagers as you can and collect as many resources as possible (DUH). The guy who usually wins is the one who can build up his resources while attacking the other Civs, therefore disrupting the other guy's economic build-up. The bottom-line is that every game is roughly the same, just different Civs and Maps. Think Command and Conquer in Mediviel Times.

I have had a pretty good time with this game, but have also been infuriated with my computer when one of my million clicks per game has gone wrong. I have been searching for a suitable "tide me over 'til Civ 3 comes out" game, but have had not much luck. Hope I've helped you out.

Owning both AOE 1 and 2. I say that 1 is better than 2. You might want to take my opinion for granted though seeing how my CD is screwed up on 2 and I can't play built in Campaigns. But also, once in a while my CD gets screwed up in 1 and I can't load or play MP games(but for 1 it only happens sometimes whereas in 2 it's permanetly screwed)

As an AOE series Expert and Veteran recently retired from the game, i can say its the most strategic game by far. The down-side to the game is it takes time to get good and time to play i've played an 8hour game with 4players just think if it was 8players of the same skill caliber

I'd say AOE II is MUCH better than AOE I and definitly worth the cash. Fox, I don't think there is too much MM, especially since you are just basically building a village (now if this was on an empire scale...). I'm also in favor of changing the name to Age of Tribes since what Empire only has 200 people (besides extra conversions). I'd also say that Conquerors expansion is worth the money. Being able to que up farms and have the villagers automatically gather resources from nearby when they build a building that you take those resources to is great.

Gates are by far what I enjoy most about the game since I always built walls.

I got an awesome strategy: play team islands as a civ who has bombard towers (Spanish ) then totally surround the island (I mean totally) with walls and spaced out bombard towers so the enemy can't land any troops and only bombard ships can get close enough to take out the walls.

Hi.

I've played RTS games like Dune II, Warcraft, Warcraft II, C&C, Dark Colony, Starcraft, Red Alert, AoE, Dungeon Keeper, Myth the Fallen Lords and Homeworld.

RTS games require the player to prioritize what to do first, which micromanagement to do before others are done, and many traditional strategy players are not very good at that.

In RTS games there is always more micromanagement to do, if one cannot accurately judge the importance of each action, the efficiency is bound to be low.

Of course techniques like learning the keyboard shortcuts are essential to play the game at the highest level.

The most common mistake of weak RTS players is that they are so engrossed in all the details of the game and forget about their main battle strategy, if they ever developed one in the first place.

All one has to do is to exploit that and attack them a little in places they do not expect and it would mess up their whole strategy, something very fun to do.

Unvala.

AOE II (Age of Kings) is a very good game. Get it and the Conquerors expansion! I bought both four months ago. Before that I didn't know anything about real time strategy games, so it required lots of learning until I won first time at the easiest level. First things I learnt: You have to be quick with mouse (I haven't learnt those shortkeys ), you don't have time to think over your decisions (at start already you must have an exact strategy to follow) and remember: build villagers and villagers and even more villagers. All the time, every second, you need to know what to do next, so that you wouldn't lose time. Sounds stressing! But it's fun!

The problem with your strategy Zeus is you have to be in Imperial Age to get your strategy to start working, and i and alot of other players on a (team)islands game will fast castle at 16minutes and move 4 vills over to your island build TC's stables and do knight rushes on you get some castles up ect....before you know it your dead Also on team islands the vikings are good to have as a partner because of their cheap boats you can pump the boats out and control the sea's so you don't have to worry about your enemy building on you.
Also my zone name is _MonK_SunTzu lets play
