Playing with Mods
Currently I play with no mods, I am an achievement junkie.
Quick and basic question, can you still get Steam Achievements while playing with mods such as Infoaddict? Or are they disabled? |

Nope. I use three mods, one of them being InfoAddict, and as long as you use mods, you can't gain achievements. If they would implement the features that IA has, then there wouldn't be an issue.

there are no achivements while playing with mods. I think that's reasonable, since you could mod a way to get the achivements easily.

Damn, that's pretty frustrating. Looks like I'm staying with Vanilla for now then.
I have no intention of cheating to get the achievements, it's just there's a lot of little fixes and improvements I'd love which are pretty much all modded, like InfoAddict. Guess I'll carry on living without them then. Cheers

I tried InfoAddict for the first time last week. Also had my first science win with Montezuma to find out that I didn't get the achievments. T.T

If the choice is between the vanilla game and achievements, or a modded game and no achievements, I don't think it's even close; the vanilla game is just horribly easy and boring compared to a good mod. It's not even close, and achievements, while nice little things to have, are ultimately useless. So I haven't played a vanilla game since, oh, November of last year.

Some mods like InfoAddict are so good they should be built into the game.

Some mods such as InfoAddict only make the game easier, so I can see why they would prevent achievements. Not that I care about achievements anyway. They can be gained by rerolling. |

You can have both here. I've been in "acievement mode" before, playing the game strictly to rack them up. Then I'll miss my favorite mods, and go back to that for a while. Mostly been playing with the mods lately.

The main difference is that there are mods that effect gameplay and there are mods that only make information available (that a player should reasonably have access to) that is currently not available (easily).
Simple mods like the one that gives you an overview of your luxuries in the top bar only mimic what's already there for strategic resources. There is no unfairness in using such mod. Otoh, if you mod the Roman Legion to have the properties of the GDR then clearly you're building an unfair advantage that changes the outcome of the game. It should be possible to have a moderation/vetting process that determines whether a mod only has visual/information effects, and should be allowed without disrupting achievements. I like playing "vanilla" in terms of gameplay, but I do also like visual/information mods. A simple mod = no achievement is the easiest to implement, but doesn't do justice to visual/information mods. |

Firaxis probably will add fan mods eventually, but they would rather the fans update their mods until the game is fully patched, rather than the devs have to worry about each mod they integrated every time they patch.
