Suggestions?

Okay, so I start off as the Persians after hitting the roulette wheel to which civ I get. Great start for the capital, lots of seafood and food/health boosting resources nearby. Most of the rest of the continent is a frozen tundra filled with forests and whatnot.

Several scouts built already, about a hundred turns into the game on Marathon speed, one scout dead and a settler built. Additional workboat built to scout coastline, but the ice has gotten in the way and it's going in circles at the moment. But there is also some problems here. Can't find a good, close enough spot to my starting point for the settler to build the city.

Is there a decent spot near the capital for the new city that will not encroach upon the city's cross? Or should I just reroll and hope for a new beginning? Should I worry about the new city producing enough hammers or food? I can chop forests to rush more workers and settlers once I have bronze working but what should I really do at this point?

a) resource bubbles
b) a save
c) more details on your game - all i got was marathon speed
d) nothing wrong AT ALL with overlapping cities

What kind of mapscript is that? Too much tundra, use a regular mapscript.

More info, please. At least I can see two spots with seafood next to the capital, settle them first.

And why have you built settler before worker? Worker first would have been a no-brainer when you have corn+sheep in fat cross. Probably horses or copper too, considering those two non-forested tiles.

Having four clams slightly reduces the need of building a worker, doesn't it?

From the screenshot i like 2 east of the corn. It can make use of the already improved seafood, will have an instant trade connection and will have a fish of its own.
Theres nothing wrong with overlap and tile sharing, the capital won't be able to make use of all of its food for a long time and you can't afford to delay use of your strongest tiles!

Looks to me like the planet generator map script with a very cold temperature picked.

Its quite interesting to play maps like this where food, resources and useful tiles are very scarce as it forces you to take a different approach.

Elizabeth of Persia

Noble Difficulty

Map Script: Planet_Generator_0_68
Huge World size
Temperate climate
Ocean 30%+ of game area
Lonely islands account for 75% of empty ocean space
10 continents
Medium sea level
Marathon game speed
Ancient Start
Permanent Alliances on
Rainy
Cool temperature (little jungle/more forests and tundra)

And that's it. If you notice, Perseopolis grew quite a bit with the seafood, didn't have animal husbandry to snag the sheep, and founded Judaism in the capital.

Starting with AH+hunting AND having corn (=5F) + sheep AND not starting with fishing increases the need for worker, doesn't it?

I would research AH+mining+BW+fishing and then chop 2-3 workboats when needed.

Yeah...just play with temperate climate. Way way way too much tundra IMO.

Might as well keep it. Pretty well off at the moment. Browsing in world builder showed that two other civilizations have rather shoddy starts, and another civ on a continent with few natural resources.

I'm thinking about re routing the settler to the east like Ghpstage said to take advantage of the seafood and corn. Either that or send my scouts farther inland and see if there's a better spot. The entire continent is hugging the South Pole it looks like.

Okay first settler settles along the southern coast to snag the crabs there and some additional farmland.

Bronze Working finally finishes up researching, so I select The Wheel as the next tech to research.

Chop some forest near the capital to get the worker and settler built, establish third city. However, I can not get the fish resource currently because of the fact it's in the ocean. Still, the city is growing moderately faster than the other non capital city. Empire currently looks like this.

Now, there seems to be some decent tundra farm areas to the north from the scouting maps, plus silver and gold farther to the west but not near farmland. Should I just tech up and invade another continent or establish as many cities as possible on this frozen landmass?

Yes huts. And to the reason why I am playing such a crappy map... new tries on different maps made me end up in worse places (tiny twelve tile island, plains continent with almost no water and plenty of warmongers, and finally my favorite the one where the Vedic Aryans attacked before 3000 BC).

Get two galleys. Get two settlers and two archers. Get code of laws. Build courthouses in your 3 cities. And build a palace somewhere else, in greener pastures, so to speak.

The "Custom Continents" feature is kind of messed up, I think. It tends to make these weird, nonsensical symmetrical maps where you can have a civ start in the middle of a super-long strip of jungle land on the equator.

Sounds like a good idea, but I will first try to establish a city elsewhere. The current situation is that several blocks of ice jut out over the coastline, making the workboat go in circles. I'll try to go north, as it seems that dear, fruit, and floodplains are there.

If all the land is like this, it could be an interesting map.

If only your land is like this, and the AIs have a normal grassland start, then just re-roll the map.

By the looks of it in worldbuilder, two other civs got the same location as me, while the others got wierdly shaped archipelago continents, a lot of them near the equator so they will be taking health penalties from the jungle in those locations. None of the civs on this map have a "superior" starting location.

LoL. If that's the case than if anyone manages to get Lib before 1200 AD I'd be surprised.

Yeah, maybe if I can send some settlers and escorts with them North and move the capital there I might be able to do better than my current situation...
