Why not? I'm a peaceable person... most of the time.

That whole business with Kora-Torr and that stuff... that doesn't count. That was an isolated incident.

As well as the Battle of the Burning Seas.

And the sack of Liguria.

And the razing of most of central Ctesiphod.

Except for that, we are a peaceable people! Trust me!

Bye.

I finally got to the massive dog-vomit that is the Aegean War: We have 5 Players and 2 Pirate factions, each with different (and, let me warn you, contrary, conflicting, and warring) objectives. Let's say I think we should go to a 2 updates-a month scheduel and I can make it up by keeping quality high and writing the NPCs in more.

Above is an offering to the tides of public opinion. All Updates since #0.

Below is the update so far, to the eve of the Aegean Mess.

http://www.wordle.net/show/wrdl/4723...ES%3A_Update_8

EDIT: DAMN!

EDITEDIT: I think I overskewed the use of the word Plague there. And the word new. . BTW, fixed. Update by Friday guys. Good luck!

Confirming that new cultures/nations won't need orders for this update since we don't have stats? If not, I can rush out some guidelines.

Update 8
The Hopes Littorae in The Mare Despero
400 Years into the Bronze Age (2650-2600 B.C.)

For much of the world, centers of civilization continue to crumble into themselves as the outer edge become ever more sophisticated. Northern Europe sees an infusion of new technologies and ideas from the Valyrians leaving behind them the Longbeards, Sarks and Torasians to battle in the Ashlands while hundreds of ships maneuver in the Aegean, Kretian, and the Levantine seas. While two empires fight “for” the Hyaks, two kingdoms struggle for the Stellar Crown while two hordes fight for the Golden Throne. And even as Xiyi secures its northern borders, new Man states rise, while far to the east, a rising clan is forming beneath the rising sun.

Hope is the last item in Pandora’s Box. The only one which is not evil.

Or perhaps, it is the worst evil of them all.

China
[-Confucius
To be able under all circumstances to practice five things constitutes perfect virtue; these five things are gravity, generosity of soul, sincerity, earnestness and kindness.]

Xilaroi truly enters a new phase of development, and is known as Xiyi both to separate the new entitlety from the old, as well as a nod to the common usage of these terms. Philosophical, Technological and Economical developments bring the Yellow River Valley to exceed twofold the productivity of the last shine of civilization before the first “Chaotic Era”. The Man states, learning both from Xiyi and the dysfunctional Huai slowly organized themselves into several new states and begun patrolling trade routes on sea and on land. Meanwhile, the Nipponese tribes on Japan sees the Katos to grow into predominance. China has truly grown out of the Plague years to meet new highs… and challenges.

In Xiyi, their canals were completed, brining water deep into the North Chinese Plains, while relatively sophisticated controls on the dikes allow them to selectively flood fields both for irrigation and for creating instant moats against future attacks. Agriculture continues to boom, and ever more forests are cut down for land and firewood for the increasing population.(+Size +2 Rural Income)

A words of a wandering sage known as Confucius was brought to prominence during this time. Alive before Xilatang even begun her first conquests, he talked about a golden age when China was united and why it was so: Respect, Piety, Ritual, and Knowledge are among the many traits he enspoused. This was adopted into Xiyi’s court and soon spread among the people. As of yet, there are no definitive collection of his works, and his disciples continue to study and write even more literature for, of, and about Confucian ways.(+Culture, +Primitive Confucianism as “Religion”)

Finally, the government orders the collection and saving of the various “Plague Journals” floating around to definitively find the best cures and enact them throughout its growing, if primitive, system of doctors and clinics. Knowledge was standardized and the plague soon became just another household disease- deadly, but not unmanageable. During this collection, several Zhangat manuscripts were found detailing a special kind of bronze created with a specific formula. When made and tested, it was fond to extremely easy to cast, but also extremely expensive to measure and produce. However, soon the forges of the Empire will start testing ways to bring this bronze into popular production.(+Bronze Formula)

All in all, Xiyi enjoys an age of peace, growth, and solidarity. The new Xiyi identity soon superseded that of Xiong, Xila, Zhang or Han

For the Man tribes, two states formed into coherence.

[Confucious-By nature, men are nearly alike; by practice, they get to be wide apart.]

The Zhou Kingdom on the coast formed from conquest. An ambitious duke, borrowing Longspear tactics from the neighboring Xiyi, conquered three neighboring states. His son, the soon to be King Daikan the First, conquered the southern coast and then subjugated the tip of the peninsula. The Zhou Kingdom is militaristic, but only to a degree in order to spread their brand of civilization. They much prefer to use their large fleet and have explored several peninsulas of the Yellow Sea.

The Duchy of Wei formed in a much different fashion. In the hills between the Huai and the Yellow rivers, the Duchy is rich in trade and minerals, but poor in food. At first, the Wei Clan ruled only the portage between the two trade zones within a much larger Man Confederacy in the region. However, one Patriarch called Ganji the Great managed to arrange a great ceremony to unify this region of trade and bring all the major families under the Wei clan. This done, he abolished internal tariffs and centralized the new Duchy of Wei. They are building a canal to connect the Yellow River to the Huai river to further the trade of ores, Bronze and exotic foodstuffs and pets.

Japan

Now we go to Japan, where the Nipponese and Ainu clans face off over many generations. The Kato Clan managed to get the upper hand using new tactics and spending much money for an army of Bronze- almost unknown to many of his Yamato rivals and his Ainu enemies.

Although his realm is at the edge of the known world, his new ideas bring sophistication to the Kato Court. His warriors are supplemented by Spearmen of bronze, and he organizes a fleet, hopefully to pursue his Yamato rivals on an large island off the coast. Meanwhile, he sometimes glances north, where the Ainu Tribes still hold dominance and refuse the worship of the rising sun.

Now that we’re done with the mysteries of a reviving East Asia, we now return to the chaos of Europe, and the Middle East, starting on the very farthest corner of the world.

Western Keltia

In Northern Europe, we see the expansion of relatively established powers while new and feared threats begun growing ever more cohesive. We see the expansion of Osisimied to control all of Armorica and of Dumonos to all of Cornwall. We also see the domination of the Frenkish Gauls south of the Loire and Ostavans between the Seine and the Rhine. Beyond the Rhine arose a seaworthy culture, which has begun some raids on the Kelts of Brittanica. Meanwhile, Sarkovian Hordes push and displace many tribes along their way to the promised land. While one Horde manage to reach its destination, the other finds itself still far from the promised lands.

First to the Western Kelts; both Dumonos and Osisimied unified their various regions and solidified their borders with a series of wars. Trade, culture and cooperation between the two celtic states are becoming ever more important.(+1 Domestic +1 Trade+1 Size each, Military readjustusted for Absences)

To the south are the Frenkish Kelts, still migrating until they finally hit the Atlantic Ocean. Much more warlike than even the Armoricans of Osisimied, they are stemmed by the wide Loire river. It would be but a matter of time before they can figure it out and launch an all out attack to extinguish these embers of civilization.

For Ostava, their Belief grows ever stronger and they conquered several portages to reach the Rhine river. The Believers are soon seen in both Osisimied and in Beurtgang Sturmithing, itself a Belgalic Keltic group which managed to conquer the Dhanraig tribal region and organize their fleets. The Strumithing, “Empire”, conquered their Dhanraig neighbors one by one until they unified all of them. Taking naturally to water, several Beurtgang chieftains started raiding an island across the Narrow Sea, citing the weak people they find there, as well as surprisingly strong resistance if they push more than a week’s march inland. The Strumithing also gain much in trade with the Ostavans, both from the Rhine and along the Narrow Sea.

Thrusting itself into Western Keltia is the Faithful horde, who encamped themselves south of an Ostavan trading town. There, Faithful and Believers intermingle and astound themselves with the many similarities and few differences between the Faith and the Belief. Even before the Faithful arrived, they spent a generation teaching and organizing a Faithful Keltic state of Provence to the south, as well as fighting their way through Frenkish Kelts and the Gaullic alps.

Eastern Keltia

In Eastern Keltia, we see arrivals of a new people who called themselves Vahlshallans, and who settled a city known as Spire. They have a strange creation myth: they came from a land beyond the mountains to the south, where they are universally despised. Many experts contend the meaning of this myth, but without evidence other than an extensive ash layer (which itself could be just evidence for slash-and-burn agriculture), it holds no weight.

The Vahlshallans are very faithful to a religion known as the Faith, which is alien to the local Kelts. Down river from the realm they carved from various Keltic Chieftains is the Pomeranian Confederacy, a loose group of tribes who want to stop expansion of the new comers.

Meanwhile, further south we see several other Faithful tribes, including several on the Danube and also a splinter on the Oder.

The Central Seas

Sardinia
Sardinia continues to dominate both the Sardinian sea and the Valyrian sea, and successfully prevented the intrusion of Pirates into their dominion. With the unification of Utica, they are now ruled by the Triple Crown of Sardinia, and hold massive influence on the trade routes in the Western Mediterranean. Several rotton apples still threaten to roll into their barrel, however. Most of the Iberians still struggle against Sardinian and Sarkovian control, Provence is passively aggressive, Mediolaun managed to clean and redredge the docks of Genoa and the Two Zirilias still control what many feel is the best entrance into the Valyrian sea. Their control, if mighty, is still imperfect.

This period of growth started with the unification of the Crowns of Sardinia and of Utica. After a century of cooperation and cultural exchange, the north African state joined with the Sardinian state. With the addition of the Crown of Nova Sarkov, the Triple Crown was created.

With far more resources under her control, Sardinia begun to seek power closer to home. The Baelerics were successfully colonized and its proficient archers hired. Nova Sarkov, if not completely safe, was at least secured as various chiefs reacted to Sardinian gifts with promises of peace. The resources of the Triple crown were unified, control was centralized, pirates were beaten down, slavery (by Zirilists) was abolished with a treaty, and the Sardinian sea became a center of peace, trade, and growth. (Stats Adjusted)

With trouble brewing at another distant colonly, the Triple crown sent its countless curraghs to meet a threat of unimaginable proportions.

Cytria
In Cytria, the delicate dance between Cytrians and Lombards is disrupted by the entry of another group- up front they seem like cousins of Lombards, but slighty deeper reveals that they are reverent believers of the Faith. As Mediolaun and Ctesiphod jocky for influence, central Cytria is slowly losing the sense of being a cytrian, replaced with a brutal, tribal atmosphere. Most of the Longbeards soon left the valley, heading southward along the coast, looking for new lands to settle and new wealth to pillage.

Mediolaun’s situation is the simplest. After making it clear to the barbarians the state of affairs between them (Stay, and die), they offered to help them find more fruitful places to pillage. After the Longbeards agreed and before the arrival of the Bloodfyres, Mediolaun spread amongst the Cytrians they protected. Although their control was patchy, they raised local strongmen as nobles and courted the remaining, Rumen-led towns with gifts and with diplomacy. Mediolaun managed to secure much of the fertile and least devastated land, as well as the ruins of Genoa itself, which is being rebuilt by the Kings of Cytria.(+1 Domestic +1 Trade +Project “Nova Genoa” + Size)

Ctesiphod also tried to spread her influence in Cytria, among other places. Criers were once more sent out to encourage towns and villages to rejoin Cytria and accept her protection. Generally, this succeeded, especially as the Longbeards pulled southward. Fruit trees were planted, and soon orchards blooms on the northern slops of the Apennines. Through cautious planning they managed to keep control of the distant Rumenholds of Apulia, Epirus, Aphod and Mencura and expanded their holdings in Illyria, where their culture has spread and rumens readily flocked to the prosperous town halls in those merchant towns.(+1 Domestic +2 Trade +Confidence)

Then came the Bloodfyres. Although fewer in number than the Longbeards, these barbarians are armed with well-made (even strangely familiar) bronze weapons and followed the principals of the Faith. They pushed away the small Longbeard homesteads which remained in the central Rtas and spread out among the weakly held or staunchly independent towns in Cytria. It is a mark of development to see the tenacious, and so far successful, defense conducted by Mediolaun and Ctesiphod.(Ctesiphod:-1 Spearmen -1 Archer: Mediolaun: -several units)

It was jut like any other day when Twenty five curraghs headed eastward. Destination: The Aegean. Goal: Unknown.

Two Zirilias
All Zirilists took a sigh when an eloquent letter from one Torasetar to another defused the conflict.

Then they realized why it was so easy, as frenzied calls for Militias rose in all Zirilist towns.

Enter the Long Beards.

Although the ruins of Bellevetum and Kora-torr, and the settlers working hard at rebuilding them were abandoned, the Zirilists were able to hold them, barely, at the Apennine passes at Fairfield. The Longbeards also placed Corsca, the northern outpost of Apulian settlement, under patchy but ominous siege. If the city fell, both the passage to Rasade and to Arlsven will be forced open.

While the Naffas-nothians used their treasury to build troops, the Toras-nothians begun expanding direct control over various Zirilist faithful. Slavers were sent to be based in Krete and in Elba. The Elban slavers gathered much intelligence on the Ashlands and raided any Sarks who dared to remain- the Sarks fought back with as much ferocity as their ancestors, but if they see a lost fight most will simply melt away into the Ashlands.

As for Krete… Pirates and Sardinians became an issue which will be espoused later. Nontheless, the Zirilist Fleet helped hold the Sardinian and Zirilist seas free of Pirates, and soon, it will be used again, much further east.(Stats Adjusted)

Atyria
The Blacksea nation begun exerting its power ever further and even into the Aegean sea. The River Wheat cultures were codexed during this time, and much of the new stories from this time tell of the inexorable expansion of this culture on the fringe of civilization. Helping spread the news of this distant land, well, better than battle ships and trading fleets, are a growing flow of Exnotist missionaries into the Aegean area. This religion, although directed more at the more civilized and centralized areas of Greece and Koyulun, took root in the heart of the Pirates of the Aegean Sea.

Domestically, trade somehow regrew and agriculture flourished. With the completion of the Rivermen Codex, ancient skills and techniques of the Don and other wheat farmers spread among the wheat traders, and vice versa. With the sharing of knowledge come understanding and unity. Homesteads expanded and several homesteads near their westernmost colony joined Atyria.

With the combined fleets delayed by Thloryn budgeting issues (see later), the Atyrian military decided to push forward several campaigns they designed to crush the few pirates who did stray into the Black Sea, and conquer new ports and breadbaskets. The planned upriver expansion against Cimmerians proceded with naval aid, and the mounted foreigners were pushed out of the southern hills into the wide plains to the north. In addition, they also launched an attack to the west when a town refused to pay taxes; the port revealed a small fleet of friendly pirates and seasoned curraghs, but infighting, as well as clever use of the Terror Hounds, broke it. Atyria secured her hold on the mouth of the Danube and the rich wheat and, news tell, the rich ores it brings from inland areas.

This wheat, it must be said, is becoming much more important to Byzantios. The civil war left the new capital city with a massive refugee problem, which soon became hereditary. The only way the Kings of Byzantinos can placate the masses is by giving out free grain; this, in turn, gave him a mass of popular support against any rebelling general.

Flushed with success, when the surprisingly small Thloryn Fleet arrived at Byzantinos and offered overall command to the Atyrian Admiral, Erisnak, they were ready to earn even more glory.

In the Aegean Sea.
The Aegean Sea was flushed with pirates, hordlings, migrants, privateers, gentlemen of the seas, free men, Jack Sparrows, Black Pearls, whathaveyou. And the similar situation was seen in the Levantine and in the South Seas portions of the Central Sea. Although Ctesiphodite control prevented spread into Cytria, and a united effort kept it out of the Western portions, these pirates continued to wreak havoc on various economies.

At first, most of the pirates where A) Egyptians who got laid off, B)Gyridites who were chased away, or C) Various Bankrupt merchants retolling their ship for a life of banditry. However, added to this mix was about twoscore of the newest Thloryn designs. And it all started with a full treasury.

The state budgeted new ships and new workshops, but somehow forgot to pay their soldiers. Their treasury was full enough for this endeavor, but most of the Oligarchs of this time were too busy facing a strange alliance pushing through the Attican passes: When Thloryn ignored both Sparta and Makedonian requests for alliance, they allied with each other to wipe out the Thlorynites. Many times have the ripe treasury been on the verge of capture by the united armies.

Finally, a soldiers and naval revolt took over Thloryn, the treasury, and a third of the fleet. One third went to Byzantinos, where, as we’ve seen, they joined forces with the Pirate-hunters both to recapture Thloryn for themselves but also finish this menace to trade. The last third, two score strong, turned pirate.

Then, there came countless fleets into the Aegean Sea…

War of the Aegean Sea
The Northern Coalition
Total Ships: 1 Curragh (1.5), 11 Curraghs (1), 136 Curragh (0.5)+200 Skiffs
Members: Oligarchs of Thloryn, Atyria, Byzantinos
Goals: Clean out Pirates, Restore Trade, Re-establish Thloryn,

The Cytrian Flotilla
Total Ships: 25 Curraghs (0.5) +50 Skiffs
Members: Ctesiphod
Goals: Help out all sides.

The Zirilist Armada
Total Ships: 3 Curragh (1) ,26 Curragh (0.5)+30 Skiffs
Members: Toras-Noth, Kretans
Goals: Secure Krete. Expand Zirilism in Islands and on Peloponnesus

The Western Coalition
Total Ships: 1 Curragh (1), 36 Curragh (0.5), 3 Colonial Arks, +50 Skiffs
Members: The Triple Crown of Sardinia
Goals: Establish Outpost on Krete, Capture Pirates

The Eastern Coalition
Total Ships: 10 Curragh (1), 40 Curragh (0.5)
Members: Phoenician Union (Tyre, Byblos, Ugarit, ect.)
Goals: Prevent Aegean Pirates from helping in the Levantine Seas

The Aegean Pirates
Total Ships: 5 Curragh (1.5), 15 Curraghs (1), 37 Curraghs (.5), +350 Skiffs
Members: Aerrrg!
Goals: Raid where the fleets are not!

The Levantine Pirates
Total Ships: 1 Curragh (1.5), 19 Curraghs (1), 24 Curraghs (.5), +100 Skiffs
Members: l’Aarrrrgh!
Goals: Hide from Phoenicia!

Total: 364 Warships- One for each day of the year!

At first, it would seem that the Pirates would be easily defeated. Except for quite a few factors.
1) The Zirilists Aramada and the Western Coalition fought over Krete almost immediately.
2) The Zirilists also got into a fight with Sparta, which was raiding Pirate coves but stopped to meet this new threat.
3) Northern Coalition were redirected into a costly war to regain Thloryn.
4) The Cytrians… weren’t all there.
5) The Eastern Coalition didn’t care much. They raided any concentration of ships (even other fleets) preemptively.

To simplify this conflict (although I have, indeed in my infinite wisdom, purused every facet of said conflicts), I present your results.
1) The Western Coalition, with massive funding, managed to keep a secure harbor in Western Krete.
2) The Zirilists replaces the Pirates as the main coastal terror of Greece
3) Thloryn is liberated with a massive army and navy ready to retaliate against Makedon and Sparta… but relies on her allies.
4) The Cytrians lost many ships in many conflicts, but also got many loot.
5) The Eastern Coalition managed to finish Securing Cyrus.
6) The Central Aegean is sill full of Pirates.

That said and done, we must look upon the remaining powers of the world. From the Nile to Koyunlun, across Mesopotamia to the Indus. For Part 2 of the update, please wait.

hmm.. curious about the support of the Thloryn. the only thing they were supposed to do was to destroy the pirates. I made no mention of supporting them.
meh, I can use this.

I'll talk to you after you finish the update.

Wonderful update, and the Faith spreads further (Oh no, goes the collective people to the south)! Great work Terrance.

Additionally... in character diplomacy for later on;

Spoiler:
From Vahlshallah to the Faithful Horde;
We eagerly await you in the New Lands we are in. Join us in our new homes, and bring along some of your friends as well! We here they practice the same belief we do.

From Vahlshallah to the Ostavans;
Would you like to join us? We practice the same religion, and we have much in common... join us, friends, and let's forge a new bond for the future!
