Preview: American Indian w/ Musket

I've posted this unit in the created units forum.

This unit was requested by Smoking Mirror as part of a scenerio he's working on. I'll be using it myself as an Iroquois Rifleman flavor unit. I'm happy with the way that he looks and everything, so I'm not looking for any advice on this one. If you feel compelled to make suggestions, feel free. You never know, I could change something. Although, all the animation are done. I have but to render them and make storyboards. I should be done in a couple of days.

Well, I just wanted to let y'all know what I was working on.

For whatever reason, the images in this thread are taking a long time to load. Be patient and the preview image will appear. I promise.

I don't know. It was there earlier, when I first posted. I've been having problems with the "upload file" stuff all morning. Maybe it will reappear later. Sorry for any inconvenience.

EDIT: It looks like it just takes a long time for the image to load. It is there though. I've just seen it.

It's just taking a really long time for images to load. They are there though. In fact, here's a look at the PediaIcon, since there are no animation previews.

looks cool , thumbs up for this unit!

one thing ,if its an American Indian w/ Musket why does he replace the rifleman and not the musket man?

and will you make a mounted version of it? it would also be great

The musket seems to long to me. Don't forget with early musket, the guy has to load the bullet in the muzzle. If the gun is longer than the guy is tall, how will he do it ?

This looks great. Would be a great second UU for the Iroquois, a musketman with either an extra movement or ignore forest movement cost. Or make him invisible, then he could conduct guerilla raids and fade away.

Yeah, I have to say, the musket does look a bit long. The one in the pediaicon looks much better. Perhaps you could reduce the size a little? Otherwise, looks great

from a realism standpoint the musket is a bit long.

please give him some moccasins (shoes) you might also consider giving him a european style coat. He either got it from a friendly nation who also gave him his musket or he took it off the dead body of a fallen enemy.

I also think he should get a uniform (even though its a lot to ask) because I try to think of hypothetical units that would be independently developed by a country. Nothing speaks against that if some tribes got it together and formed a nation, that they would have independently developed uniform military standards similar to other countries so I think something more like the guy in the 2nd picture would look awesome.

Oh yea, and give him some footwear or he'll be forced to buy something from PayLess...

Here are some interesting Iroquois pictures.

This is an engraving done in 1620 after Champlain's first encounter with the Iroquois.

Here is a painting from the late 18th century. Note the difference in battle dress.

And here is an interesting image that, while a charicature, is a good depiction of traditional Iroquois dress.

Whatever you do please make sure to give him some shoes. These guys weren't completely primitive. And for future units keep in mind that they lived in the North East region of what is now the United States, i.e. New York and the surrounding areas. That means they encountered bitter winters so throwing some buckskin shirts and pants shouldn't be completely out of the question.

When I requested this quy I specificly asked for a long musket. I was thinking of the indians from "last of the mohichans".

The thing is, before rifling the only way to increase the acuracy of muskets was to increase the length of the barrel. In european armies, because of their style of combat, A long musket was impractical (they had enough problems forming up to fire just using the short bareled musket). However, in other parts of the world where that european style of combat was avoided in favour of partisan or guerilla warfare; Here acuracy was favoured over rate of fire, the marksman either retreating or discarding the rifle in favour of hand weapons such as the tomahawk.

So when the American indians, Especialy the northern tribes, who could use the forests for effective partisan warfare managed to aquire rifles, they generaly chose the long barreled musket.

Perhaps for a plains indian, the short barreled musket would be more usefull, but the inacuracy and slow loading times of muskets mant that a bow and arrow, or spear was more usefull.
It was only when the advanced rifle, with its fast reload time and high accuracy, was developed that it was taken up in large numbers by the plains indians. By that time however it was already too late to evert the eventual fate of the native americans.

But even so, that musket is really, really long.
