This probably means that trading post graphics simply change with the era, like quarries (and maybe mines?) currently do.

The trading posts did already change in appearance. But no, it wasn't subtle at all. Ancient trading posts looked like a "medieval" fair, while modern trading posts looked like some kind of sad mining village.

Trading Posts are now unlocked with Guilds (a new Medieval technology that follows Currency), so that probably explains why we haven't been seeing them in the mostly Ancient/Classical screenshots.

just unlocked later in tech tree?

or will there be more to this mystery?... (if we can still call it a mystery)
