Civilization 4 ranged attack???

I find quite puzzling that archers and other ranged units can't actually do ranged attack ??? is there a mod to rectify this ?

thanks

Yeah, it is quite stupid.I think you could do this without the need of a separate mod, you could probably just change some settings and give archers the "bombard" ability that siege units have and allow them to have range attack that way, you could probably also just remove the max damage that you would be able to do since different siege units have different max damage cap.

Check out the C&C forum, specifically this place:

Modpacks Forum

My memory fails me at present, but I know I've played some large modpacks that have ranged bombardment for archery units. Usually something like that is part of a smaller mod component or you just may like to play the modpack. The mod thread usually lists the mods/components that it uses. Check around there or the other mod components forums.

If you download my mod (check my sig), i included a simple XML way to do it. I have no clue how it works, but the person you want to ask is topsecret (literally, that's his name ).

Dale's Combat Mod has ranged bombardment for capital ships and (mobile) artillery.

(I'm No modder or have any technical knowledge of civ modding etc, my post is with knowledge of mods that are around and experience from being around the civ community)

@jimbbq I don't want you to have the wrong idea, what you want should not be majorly difficult and from what I seen it should be rather easy, just adding a few lines into the xml, the only issue I see that can come up is that the range (non siege) units don't have a range attack animation, but that really shouldn't be a problem..

All I was trying to make you aware is that because this request is rather "simple" you would not need a "big" mod if range attack is all you want.It could very easily be done by yourself, if someone would just point you to the right locations.

You can get a mod that has this, I'm sure there are a few around, but with a mod you would probably get extra's which you aren't really looking for.

Both ways are possible.

If you scale the game properly, you will find the ranged capabilities of most units is in fact one. One tile represents hundreds of miles if a medium sized map represents Earth. Missile are about the only thing capable at this point of traveling so far, and they are already special units in that way.

The first strike system is actuall quite adequate, thinking about it in retrospect... esp after CiV had ranged units. Those archers are capable of decimating an army with the proper support of a city and infantry. A scarcher is basically a hit and run monster, and cannons and artillery all but end the game. Although I feel they did better with the strength/weaknesses of boats in 5, they also took out transports in favor of something that made them almost obsolete for everything but show. (I have yet to see a good use of boats by the ai, with the exception of killing my rafting units.

If you do choose to mod it, pls leave collateral damage out.

Shooting people hundreds of miles away with arrows. Damn, master archers. :3 And if we go down that route, then modern units would need more range, and Civ 5 sorta choked there. It would be horribly imbalanced, and sadly ranged combat only works in civ 5 due to the limited units per tile. With unlimited unit stacking, non-ranged units would be utterly useless unless you heavily nerf ranged units. Civ is a strat game, not a tactical game. (it's also what civ 5 failed to understand... mixing both)

Unless the ranged combat strength is different from the unit's strength, or the bombarding can only do x% damage.

Dear all

Thanks for the reply.
What I want is really simple, something like Civ 5! where archers or siege units can attack cities, other units from far away.

Please let me know how I can change the XML file to do that.

Thanks for your help!!!!
Jim

I tried various mods, and none of them worked! I am a mac user so maybe this is the reason>??

This is. Mod that modify the *.dll file (and ranged bombardment mods do modify it) don't work on Macs.

Aha. What version of Civ4 are you using?
If it is beyond the sword, my mod should work- all of it has been XML

Also look at History Revisited (or History R-somethng-or-other: not sure of the second word. It is known as HR). It uses ranged weapons but also adds loads of other things. It will definitely work on a Mac, since the author uses a Mac.

I believe their ranged attack is represented by first strikes. You'll find that all archers have first strikes by default. However, this logic isn't followed by riflemen (non-protective).

I also think that having archers shoot over tile or two, in other words, with range in dozens of kilometers is far more stupid, than existing mechanics.
