Resources bonus limited to Happiness/Health when trading them?

Hi all,

I've been playing Civ4 for years and I just start to ask myself silly questions, like:

When you acquire a resource via trade, do you only get the Health/Happiness bonus, or do you also get the food/hammer/commerce bonus? If you do, where does this bonus go? Capital? Every city?

e.g, you get rice (+1 Food, +1 Health) from some other civ. You surely do get the +1 Health in every city, but do you also get the +1 food in every city? It seems like you don't, but I want to be sure. Also, why don't you? Don't you think trade would be a lot more exciting if resources provided their food/hammer/commerce bonus not only to the city they are worked by, but to every city of the civ who owns that resource, just like the Health/Happiness resource? If anything, it would allow poorly-located cities to grow and build faster. It would also be logical, i.e, right now I get better health from rice but I can't eat any...

The "other" bonuses (food, hammer, etc.) are tile bonuses. You get those bonuses for working that tile. Because you are not working that tile, you do not receive said bonus. Subsequently, you do not lose the bonuses if you trade away your resource.

^^^I think you meant "hammer" not "health"

tranx....yeah, as kesshi mentions, you are confusing the tile improvement bonus vs. the health/happy/strategic/wonder bonus. (I actually used to be confused by that when I started out, thinking that horses were giving me an extra hammer to my cities)

The hammer or food bonus affects the tile improvement. Rice is +1 food. An unimproved dry rice goes from 3F to 4F. Wet rice goes from 3F to 5F due to the fresh water bonus.

Yes, I did. Thanks for catching that.

I edited my post to reflect this.

Thank you. Yes I confused the different bonuses. What led to the confusion is that when you want to trade a resource, during diplomacy talks all the bonuses, including the tile bonus, are listed in the information boxes about resources, making me believe that I could obtain food, hammers or commerce by trade.

So if I understand clearly, when I acquire uranium from trading I just acquire the ability to build nukes and other uranium-related units.

Did not think of it that way. Yes. It would be too big a deterrent for trading.
