what is it with these barbarians?

um why is it that a supposidly inferior barbarian tribe can give me a map of their region in 3000 b.c., but i cannot give the A.I a map of my region until i discover map making?????? if the barbs know how to make maps why dont they just teach me?

Do you mean you got a map from a Goodie Hut? A barb will sooner attack you then give you a map.

Anyway... It's the simple mechanic's of the game.... They give you a map, but are not friendly/willing enough to teach you mapmaking. Or maybe your civ is not experienced enough yet to even get the midst of it (IE: Does not have writing or literture) so it would be a waste of time to them.

How inferior can they be if you can get 3 or 4 advances from them in the course of the early game? I think of them as Etruscans - they give you the benefits of their culture then disappear.
