The counter to infantry is artillery.
![]() But since the AI doesn't know how to use artillery on offense, the computer players are very weak during the infantry era.

Infantry are tough but Artillery will bring them down easily. They have slow movement so if the AI is using them as cover for attackers they will have to move at the slow rate of 1 sq/turn.

infantry should be tough that is what they are for they are to represent that time in ww1 when no-one could break the deadlock as no-one had a powerful enough weapon to defeat them until the tank.

I'm glad infantry are tough. My current campaign has me sharing a continent with the war-happy Ottomans who were a couple of techs ahead of me. They captured towns at will, slowed only by terrain. My musketmen put up no resistance at all, and riflemen weren't much better. I only stopped them when I bought enough techs from other civs to get me infantry.

Infantry are truly one of the most important units in the game, for both human and AI players. In most games, I always try to get cavalry quickly so that I'll have a nice block of time to attack other civs that still defend their cities with musketmen or riflemen. But once the AI gets infantry, its pretty clear to me that I'd better start a path to Motorized Transportation, or just build a s**t-load of artillery.
