Trading Advances with AI

If you are researching an advance and have accumulated a number of beakers, but you then trade for that advance, what happens to those beakers? Do they just evaporate, or do they get applied to whatever advance gets selected? I haven't been able to find this in any of the FAQs, so if someone knows I'd sure appreciate knowing!

Magnet,

This sort of question should go in the "Newbie Questions" thread.

What, you refer him to the newbie thread and don't even answer his question? Shame on you .

The beakers just disappear. They don't get carried over, just like if you switch techs mid-research.

DiamondzAndGunz is correct. The researched beakers dissapear, but those beakers will reduce the prce you have to pay for a tech. So if you have researched half of a tech, then you will be able to buy it for half price as well.

ex: You want tech A, that cost 1000 beakers to research, and that an AI civ is willing to sell for 900 gold.

If you research the tech for 100 beakers per turn for 5 turns (a total of 500 beakers), then the AI will sell the tech for something close to 450 (900 * 500/1000). (This is a simplified formula).

If you research the tech for 1 beaker per turn for 39 turns (and thus only have one turn left), then the AI will sell the tech for 865 gold. The AI doesn't care that you're almost finished researching, it only cares that you have researched 39 beakers and thus has 961 of the 1000 left, thus calculating a price of (900 * 961/1000).

So the conclusion is: Don't be afraid of buying the tech you are currently researching, unless you have researched it at minimal cost for close to 40 turns.
