Hi all,

How often do you guys happen to play lotto and do you follow a strategy (like picking out lucky numbers, sticking to the same numbers over and over again etc) or just do random entry picks?

Anyone care to share their secrets on how to win the lottery?

- Adam

Lotteries are a tax on stupidity.

I play powerball when the jackpot is high sometimes. I justify this by presuming it would be hilarious if I won, which both increases utility and probability (under the condition that God sometimes alters powerball results and has a sense of humor).

I knew an educated and intelligent man who had a system to make a 'guaranteed' profit from the Lotto.

(Essentially it was an adaptation of the Martingale)

He watched the Lotto results and waited until a single number (say 25) hadn't come up in a number of draws.

He then bet on that individual number coming up with a bookmaker.
If it didn't come up in that draw he would bet on it again in the next draw - doubling his bet to cover his previous losses plus make a profit if it came up.

The idea was to continue to increase the bet until it was eventually drawn and he covered all his losses and made a small profit.

Anyways he kept going until he had no money left and he started reducing his bets to the amount of cash he had available. His number did eventually come up but since he had reduced his bet it didn't cover his losses.

Despite losing money he remained convinced that his plan would work if only he had enough cash to fund it....

I play, but I'm not under any illusions that it's money well spent. It's still a better investment than an extra 2 pints per week. I use random numbers every time.

(under the condition that God sometimes alters powerball results and has a sense of humor).

Million to one shots come up 9 times out of 10.

That's a terrible plan for the lotto because nobody actually wins the lottery.

It's a great plan for roulette playing, though, if there weren't these maximums. That's why at the casino I perused, the maximum was 15 times the minimum bet. You could only try the doubling approach 4 times before you'd run into trouble.

Of course, whether a colour or number has come up a lot yet is irrelevant to whether it will come up in the future. If the ball luckily landed on black 15 times in a row, the probability it will fall on black again is the same as the probability it will do so when it's actually fallen on red 15 times in a row.

I read a comment on CNN that sums up my thoughts pretty well.

It was something like "buying a $2 powerball will give me three days to think and dream about what I would do with the millions I know I most likely won't win, but its better value than going to a ball game and drinking a $8 beer or going to a movie and eating a $10 bag of popcorn".

I sometimes play powerball. Mostly play quick picks, though I tried birthdays and ages for a short while. but birthdays aren't that good for all the numbers because when the numbers are chosen from a range of up to 58 or whatever it is for powerball it's not likely all the numbers will be below 31.

I like that. I understand the reasoning behind the sentiment that I regularly see expressed on this site, that it is a tax on stupidity, but the money I'm wasting isn't money that's going to be put to better use (though I'm not speaking for everyone who plays).

Why not take the money that would make you "feel better" from the idea that you have a zero chance of winning the lottery, and invest it into making you "feel better" about the fact you're helping important charities?

Because I don't actually care about others (except to the extent that they benefit me), it's all a lie I perpetuate for social convenience.

The lotteries have other prizes than just the big jackpot.

I spend $2 a week on lotto. $104 a year won't make that much difference whether I spend it on myself or on a charity.

The lottery is entertainment, and not mad entertainment at that.

I always spend like 10 bucks when the [payout / chance of winning] surpasses the price of the ticket.

I don't play the lottery and I think that there are elements of exploitation in the system. However, I don't criticise the people who play the lottery; they can do with their money what they please. I prefer to criticise the exploiters, if they can so be called.

Plus if you had access to enough capital to make this strategy meaningfully profitable, you would probably make a greater return on capital by normal investment strategies. E.g. earning 5% interest on property or something. They're all 50/50 bets afterall.

See, I'd buy a book.

Buying into a syndicate at work is a good way of bonding with your fellow proles though.

It's not about feeling better about yourself. It's temporary permission to indulge in absurd fantasy.

The odds of winning are extremely low. Some people do get a kind of "high" when they gamble and this can become addictive. Lottery addicts continually spend more and more to feed it.

Of course, most people don't become addicted if they limit their playing to only a few dollars now and then.

The best way to win really is not play and invest in something good for the world.

Yes I'm sure the most virtuous thing I could do with $2 a week isn't to play the lottery. Fortunately I'm not running for pope, so I'm not too fussed if I don't do the absolute best thing I could possibly do in every situation, especially when I'm talking about 2 fudgin' dollars.

(For the record, I don't play the lottery. But I do equally wasteful things with my money that for some reason nobody seems to judge me for, such as buying little trinkets with which to decorate the house I am deeply in debt for. I reserve the right to piss my money away without anyone telling me off like they're my master or something.)
