Need help with the REF...

Hello All, I'm hoping someone here can answer a question for me.

I've been having trouble during the war of independence, where I get the REF down to the point that he only has like 2 cavalry units left, but then refusues to commit these forces to the field... so there's no way I can win the game.

Is there any way to coax these reluctant soldiers into embarking on their suicide mission? <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif" border=0> <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/biggrin.gif" border=0> <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>

I take it you're playing the Windows version of the game. I've encountered this same problem. The computer says its landing near such and such a colony, but no one gets off the ships. The only solution I know of is to junk the windows version and stick to the DOS version. Yes the tax rate drops to nothing, but at least you can finish the game!

Yeah, it's the windows version... they claim to be landing near such and such, then nobody gets off the boat.

I've tried killin' all their Man O'war's, nut'n. I've tried pulling all the soldiers out and away from the colony they like to threaten, nut'n. I wind up with a mondo score, 'cause I can sell for 175 years without the game ending, and have a boatload of cash, but frankly a lot of the time I get sick of watching the wheels on the wagons go 'round & 'round, 'round & 'round, 'round & round...

You might try keeping the cd in the drive (something I never do since I don't listen to the music), however I did try this once (I shut off the music) but still hit the bug you mentioned. 3 of the 4 games I played with the windows version (in which I bothered to fight the revolution) ended with the REF refusing to fight. Of course most games, either DOS or Windows, I hit the unit limit and either quit or declare. This is one problem we are definitly going to change with our new game.

I don't know which cd you have, I've got 3 that have Colonization on them. One just has the DOS version, but the other two contain both the DOS and Window versions. If you've got one of those, I suggest you stick to playing the DOS version (It'll be in the Colonize, directory).

The version I have only has Col for Windows... I'll have to download the DOS version later maybe. Either that, or just deal with it...

I play it on Mac and it's ok. Anyway, normally even though there remain 2 units, you must win. In the user book, they say that it you can survive and destroy at least 50% of your king's forces while owning at least 50% of your coastal colonies then you win. And that's the case with me. I never destroy all the REF. Usually when 5 units are left the king gives me the Independance. Weird bug on the PC version...
Play on Mac

Sounds like the Mac version is really weird! In both the DOS and Windows versions you have to control 100% of ALL your colonies, as well as having practically wiped out the REF (less that half a dozen ground units left, usually).

To be honest, I've never taken a game all the way to 1850 that way... wonder what would happen?

I suppose it's the same thing when you finish Civ in 2020 AD... Retiring.
Joe, it's not the Mac version that's strange, it's written in the manual.

Not in my manual. The REF can win if it controls all your ports or 90% of your population, but in order for the player to win he needs to control all of the colonies he started the revolution with, and reduce the REF to a few units (ususlly less than 6 ground units).

JoeBas, do you have a saved game in which the REF refuse to fight? I think I may have come up with a solution for those of us that have both the Windows and DOS versions. The saved games are interchangable (you have to rename the file). I'd like to see if I played the last turn of a Windows game (where the cowardly REF refuse to get off their ships) with the DOS version, if the game would end. The scoring for both versions is the same, so if you prefer the look and game controls of the Windows version (I don't, for the most part), you could play it until the last turn or two, and then switch over to the DOS version for the final celebration!

The biggest advantage the Windows Version has, is that the bug with the tax rate is fixed. Since you've only played the Windows version, you probably don't know what I'm talking about. In the DOS game, at some point (I think it usually happens after Fugger shows up, but I could be wrong), the tax rate changes. In my case it almost always drops to zero, though I have heard of it just sort of jumping around. Understand, I'm not complaining about lower taxes! Its just that I'd like to play the game the way it was meant to be played.

Anyhow! If you do have a saved game, could you send it to me at:

jd2starsky@netzero.net

Thanks!

Question dos versus windows bugs

hi,
im new to both colonization and this forum.
so greetings to you all!
anyway, this thread was the first id ever heard of the tax rate and ref bugs.
my question is, are there any other major differences bewteen the dos and windows versions of the game? i mean beyond the graphics and other visual differences.
is there a list of changes and/or bugs to be found anywhere?
and, why do you prefer the dos version, landgrabber?
it would seem to me that, since it is newer and more updated, wouldnt it be best to play the windows version, and then just switch your save game to the dos one in order for the ref to disembark?
