SGOTM 18 - Xteam

Plan looks good. CoL after Construction is a good choice religion or not. I suspect it will be not since both Mansa and Gandhi like founding religions and have probably already started on it even now... :rolleyes:

A spear and an ax haunting that pass help me sleep at night too :D [Perhaps I live in Pig City?]

In a turnset or two we'll be ready to seriously kick some rear ends. :devil: [by then we'll even know which rear ends to kick - the diplo potential might be clearer...]

I've played 8 turns, pausing for advice. So far, everything has gone pretty much to plan. Only events of note so far:

- I slightly changed the worker plan. When the worker in Washington finished his cottage, I sent him to pig city to chop and mine a hill. Washington has enough improved tiles for a while, Pig City needed one more.
- Joao demanded Aesthetics, I gave it to him.
- Mansa demanded Lit, I refused. Unlikely he would beat us to Gr Lib, but I was unsure which wonders he had and if there was any chance he had a GE. He is plenty happy with us, so I decided to refuse.
- Mansa founded Confusianism
- I came across a Joao stack heading for Goldmember.
- Then...

The reason for the pause... I just found a Genghis stack north of New York. (See screen cap - 2 axes, 1 chariot, 1 archer). Khan is not in WHEOOHN mode. He currently is cautious with us and unhappy with Gandhi. He is at war with Goldmember.

I am inclined to ignore his stack, assume it is on a long treck towards Goldmember, and continue our granary builds. However, I wanted to check in with the team. If we think he is going to DOW on us, we might be able to whip a spears in New York and Pig City and try to build our defenses.

Interim save: Note, this has not been uploaded to central and I am still playing the turn set.

View attachment Austin Powers BC-1000 in progress.CivBeyondSwordSave

I will pick up again tomorrow. Unless the team feels differently, I will ignore Kahn stack and proceed with our current builds. If he demands a tech, I will give it to him. I don't think we have any Christian cities (do not have the game open), but if he does demand a religious change, I will refuse and start whipping units.

If Khan is not in WHEOOHN mode I would also be inclined to not madly create units to fight it - it is much more likely it is not intended for us. I would however try and watch it to see where it goes... :mischief: If it camps on our border I would become nervous and might be inclined to change my mind.

As long as the stack is on the move I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I would put 5 hammers into a spear in NY. Then go back to the normal build. If needed the spear can be whipped. If we do not build the spear in time then it is just 5 hammer loss.

Yes. I like this. Barring any unexpected events, I will finish tonight.

Played just a few more turns and have come to some trade and tech decisions. As I have played 11 turns, I think its a good time to turn over to the next player. I've uploaded the save to central.

Notes:

Turn 68 (1280 BC):
  • whip settler for 2

Turn 69 (1240 BC)
  • Joao demands Aesthetics, I agree
  • Fish City: galley -> worker
  • Pig: Settler -> Rax
  • NY: whip monument

Turn 70 (1200 BC)
  • NY: Monument -> granary
  • Confucianism founded in Timbuktu
  • Fish whips worker for 2

Turn 71 (1160 BC)
  • Fish: worker -> Library
  • change of plan, Washington worker heading to pig city to chop and mine
  • Found Boston
  • Fembot discovers a Joao stack moving on Goldmember

Turn 72 (1120 BC)
  • Pig: Rax -> spear

Turn 73 (1080 BC)

Turn 74 (1040 BC)
  • Mansa demands Lit, I refuse

Turn 75 (1000 BC)
  • Great Prophet born somewhere
  • Kahn stack appears so I pause
  • Switch New York to a spear

Turn 76 (975 BC)
  • Washington: Gr Library -> Rax, now working cottage to grow
  • Pig: Spear -> spear. Spear heading towards Boston
  • Mahabodhi built somewhere
  • Great Spy born somewhere
  • Kahn stack moves SW, now on NY border
  • No tech trades available

Turn 77 (950 BC)
  • Great General born somewhere
  • Construction -> COL
  • Kahn is passing through NY borders. Two archers follow.
  • NY switches back to Granary (only 4 hammers in spear, but I feel safe)

Turn 78 (925 BC)
  • Pig: Spear -> Axe

Notice two trades are available so I stop. Potential trades:

Mansa: Construction and Lit -> CoL
Gandhi: Construction and Alpha -> Meditation and Monarchy

I would take both trades, but decided to stop so we can decide as a team. If we take the trades, we will also need to decide on next tech (my vote is CS).

One final note: Out previous plan had Fish City building suicide cats (no RAX). We need an MP in Pig City, so I would have Fish City build an archer before cats.

:goodjob: Hawk! :hatsoff:

We got the Great Library and from Genghis, only :love:

Roster:
Cactus Pete - UP
Htadus - On Deck
leif
zamint3
Sengir
Mad Professor
The-Hawk

Off to look at the save.

I think CP is out of the loop for a couple of days if Htadus is available? Otherwise, we can wait a day or so, much to discuss. :)

Good job Hawk.

Seems Genghis is definitely not aiming that stack at us.

If my hand was on the mouse, I'd do those trades. :) CoL and Monarchy are both useful techs right now, and Meditation opens up philosophy for a scientist bulb.

Yes, I think CS is a good next tech, and here's to some scientists from the GL specialists...

I'm using a different computer for a few days so I can't look at the save.

Well, Hawk has certainly improved our position.

Appologies, but there is just no way that I can play before at least 10/16 (and I am going out of town and out of touch for the next three days).

Still think we should consider going after Members Only once a few cats are built.

BTW, when I opened the save and started looking at what the Hawk had wrought, the game quickly closed on me (for no apparent reason) and put me back to my desktop with the BtS icon in the tray. When I clicked on it, the game re-opened, but it was asking me what I wanted to build in Fish City. Had to choose something to get out of it. The game had moved on to the next turn, so I closed it without saving. Then I opened the save again and finished looking without further incident. Should we alert Central before a red flag goes up?

Revised Roster:
Htadus - UP
Cactus Pete - On Deck
leif
zamint3
Sengir
Mad Professor
The-Hawk

If Htadus can play, and finishes before the 16th, that would put me ahead of you CP. :)

Hope everything works out well with RL. :please:

edit - sent a PM to Swede telling him about CP's difficulty with the save. He told us to continue on. :)

Got it.

It look like we are in the early stage of gathering a force. I still do not trust GK's forward team. I am going to hold the current spear heading out of our fortress just in case he get any funny ideas.

It is time we try to make a commitment to where we want to go with this game. It appear that we have 2 fast options and 1 slow.

Culture: will lead us to build 2 cities as culture cities in addition to the Mids city. So only thing we are doing different is trying to get enough GA's to get 2 cities to LC. Every win need the Mids city to be LC, so it doen not matter. Our capital and Mansa's capital will do very well. Joao and Genghis dead.

Diplo: We need either Genghis to be second largest or have the UN city to be our opponent and Mansa and Gandhi to be our best friends. Very possible. We need Joao dead at the least.

Space: Keep Mansa and Gandhi around as tech partners and expand our empire to 1% less than domi asap.

I think Diplo will be the fastest followed by culture and then Space. But all I want is what other's think.

  1. If it is culture, then we want Mansa's capital asap and build the SoZ, Parth and other artistic wonders in the capital.
  2. If it is diplo, we should decide if we want Genghis minimized to 1 city and gift him UN later or let him grow to size 2 on his own (This may not be too safe). Based on what we decide, we can choose our war target.
  3. If it is Space. DoW Ganghis asap and take out his 3 main core cities within first 6 turns of the war. In my recent S&T games, typically 6-7 cats and 12-14 ground units can do it around 500 BC with some evil whips. I think I should be able to get very close to that.

So lets hear some thoughts from all the available team members.

I shudder to hear myself saying it but the way you put that Htadus, it looks like Diplo is the most attractive option.

[Ugh - I'm off to wash my mouth out with soap - how did that ever come out of my mouth...? ;)]

Whatever option, it sounds like it's high time for serious war drums.

One problem with diplo the way you put it - wouldn't taking out Joao cause us diplo problems with his friends (who we might want as our friends? At least it would have to be one war declaration ONLY and wipe him out without getting peace.

Another question. Where does Goldmember come into this? I still think Members Only looks like a city that can contribute to our efforts no matter which victory type we are aiming for.

If we go for diplo I MUCH prefer Genghis as a one city lame duck to whom we gift the UN than as the second biggest empire in the game. :eek:

To war, to war, to war! :ar15:

Edit: Oh - and don't expect anything out of me for the next few hours. The AFL grand final starts in less than an hour (for the Americans among you that's a bit like Superbowl, but Australian) and some things are more important than CIV. :D
