War on all fronts

I guess being @ war with everyone is not such a good idea!!!
On my current game I am at war with everyone I have come in contact with so far. I dont know exactly what drove me to it, but every civ I came in contact with wanted something from me and would only give me crappy deals. I am pretty far behind in tech aswell, since fighting the Indians pretty much from the start, but I have been arrogant the whole game and not accepting unfair peace treaties or trades. So I think it could be a combination of these things that have put me in the spotlight for war:
1. Arrogance
2. Behind in tech
3. Aggresive
So far the French and the Indians have declared a joint war on me (Germans) and the English and Japanese have declared war on me too, aswell as the Russians.
I'm gonna keep on playing though and try to be a bit more diplomatic.

A French and Indian war, that's funny, but not as funny as Germany fighting England and Russia simultaneously. It's only Japan that doesn't make sense...

Hmmm....happened to me once, but solely because of those MPPs.
I had MPPs with several nations. The war began when China attacked France. I did not like China because it was too powerful and France was a long time ally. Well, of course I gave money to the French and when I saw the Chinese conquer a lot of their territory, I signed an alliance with France. I then sought an alliance with Babylon. Well, the Babs always bring lots of allies with them. Eventually it came down to this-Germany, China, Zuluand vs me, Frnce, Babylon, and some other weak nations. Well the French attacked Germans who had already went to war with them, and since I had an MPP with them, I decalerd war on France. Then the Chinese signed a alliance with Germany against me. So I lost all of my allies and steadily gained enemies in this process... same for the Chinese. It eventually turned into a civ melee wich had spread to the other major continetns. Since I was practically in the middle of the continent, my civ was ovverrun with invaders. I had a huge empire though, and by the time the enemies had gotten down to the core cities, my defense was up.

If you want a "fair deal" (and I guess that means one that favors you ... at least that is my definition!) when it comes to peace terms, the AI will only be reasonable when you are negotiating at the pointy end of your tank. You have to take away a few of their cities before you can get a peace treaty with no strings... or better yet you should severely whoop them and they will give you almost anything you want. If it takes throwing them a bone of 50 gold, just give it to them.

Also, if you have a weak military, you will be AI bait. All the Civs will want a piece of your crumbling empire before the others take you out. Cruel pretend world.

Yes if you take some cities from the AI they will give you lots of things especially if they dont want a war. In the ancient ages I usually turn my science down to 0 soon as I meet another civ (to get extra cash), then declare war on them take a couple cities, go for peace, demand all there techs, they accept, I declare war take more cities, get all there techs. destroy the civ...Then I have just as much techs as if I would have been reaserching, if not more, and I have lots more money to put to science and get ahead . Its a pretty good strategy and works well for me.

I was once at an early war with everyone (who were also at war with everyone else) on an Archipelago map and I didnt see a single unit the entire duration of the war. Not even a Galley...

Bizarre.

I guess thats what I did wrong then. I was behind on tech and by trying to catch up I sacrificed my miletary might to improve sience.
The only question I have is: Does the AI know how powerful you are throughout the game, or only after, eg. "share world maps" or "establish embasies"?

same thing happened to me

everyone ganged up on me, because I was the weakest, and in 2 turns it was all over. This was after I made a few mistakes and declaired war too early and didn't have the Blood Lust I now have. I fight for keeps and I Kill'm All!!

I played Carthage on a real world map, which is not an ideal starting position... had four civs gang up on me before we got started good... Russia, England, Spain and Germany. About 1500 BC. Never saw a spainsh unit... but being close to spain, invaded and took their land. Germany backed out. England backed out. Russia never made peace, but never sent a unit... until about 970 AD.
