City of Heros

In the middle of an awsome game right now...huge map, five random civs, random map, monarch, Romans.

Last night, after my 160th 'on more turn before bed', I refused to renogotiate a trade with the English for iron, and I was their only source of iron. We were both in the middle ages, and both about equal as far as military strength. This is why I decided to cut their supply of iron...to shift the balance in my favor.

Lo and behold Queen Elizabeth (can she look any more dead?) declared war and focused all her forces against one city: Byzantium.

I had six Pikemen and six legions garrisoned there, walls, and barracks. England quickly whittled away a few of my defenders, and reinforcements were sent from all over the empire, but because of Byzantiums remote location (I used it as a harbor hub for five resource colonies), the battle was over before they arrived by boat.

Anyway, after eight or so turns of continual combat, I started getting heros. I've never had heros before. I moved the leaders out of the city and onto a few waiting transport ships and quickly moved them away from the conflict.

Here's my question: What's the difference in a unit and a unit with a name? Are there any stat bonuses? I know what leaders are for, but since this is my first time getting heros and leaders (had the game for a week), I'm at a bit of a loss as to why I get to name the combat units. I always thought, from reading the manual, that all you get is a leader.

Anyway, Byzantium fell to the English, and remained in their posession for the next ten rounds or so before I gathered enough forces to liberate the city. Once done, Enland fought hard for it but my forces were too strong, and England quickly ran out of iron-units so they really didn't stand a chance.

In the end, I got my iron back and Elizabeth has humbled herself before me. I still ain't giving them any iron, but I got a good deal on a Peace Treaty and MP (gpt to me for each).

All my named units fell with the city (should have a SW: Unknown Soldiers Tomb when more than x named units fall in a single city), but at least I got the leaders to my capitol for future use.

Do you mean Leader, or did you do something with them as soon as you got them? Since you can only have one Great Leader at a time, I'm going to assume you've used them as soon as you've gotten them.

No matter, the answer is the same.

When you have a 'named' unit, there is a little asterisk next to the name when you right click on the unit. This notes that the unit you are looking at has produced a great leader, and cannot create another one until it's been upgraded and returned to veteran status.

You might want to be careful about upgrading your elite-non-GL-producing units. They will have to be promoted to Elite again before being able to create a great leader.

I had one leader, then he died. Then I got another right after he died, and then he died. Then I got another that I put on the boat. But I had more than one named unit, and they all died. LOL.

So there are no stat bonuses to named units?

Nope. They just don't get to create another leader. Use these for defense, upgrade them, attack first with them (most people like to save the elites for 'sure wins' to increase the chance of a leader). . .

Man, that sux about losing the leaders. That would really piss me off. . .

I actually had 3 GL's created in one turn, and they were all DEFENSIVE units!!! I was fighting against Persia and they had something like 800 MI and 600 MA, I timed that turn and it took 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete, of course all 3 of them died, but 3 GL's all made from defensive attacks?? I couldn't believe it.

Yeah, but he didn't have that option, because the GLs were created when the AI attacked him. He had no chance to move them. I had a game where I lost a GL because my defender that created it was destryoed the next turn. . . to say I was perturbed would be like calling the Titanic a little boat.

i thought you could only have one GL at a time?

Right. YOu can only have one GL at a time, but you can have multiple ones a turn. Here is probably what happened to Sabo"

Defensive elite unit is attacked, wins and gets GL.
Injured defensive elite unit protected GL is attacked and loses. bye bye GL.

Another elite unit is attacked, wins and gets Gl.
INjured defensive elite unit portecting GL is attacked and loses. bye bye GL.

Repeat for the third time.

(I think at this point I would have screamed and probably broken my PC. Gone to my wife and said "short curcit, our PC is fried. We need a new one and while we are at it, lets get a better processor so that I can tryout this game, pointing to ptw box sitting on the bookshelf.) Sorry got a little off topic.
