Angry The city number limit

Max city number = 512

512 citys occupy 12,288 grids.
At original Civ3
the Map of Earth (180*180) have 32,400 grids, 60% sea, sufficiency
At PTW
the Map of Earth (362*362) have 131,044 grids, 60% sea, we need 2000 citys at least.

who can break the limit?

CTP ? You are talking about Call to Power?

The thing about the number of cities is that when you reach this number, you must have a monster at home to make the game work smoothly! I already had to wait 40 minutes between turns. Playing with 512 cities. Anyway would be nice the see the world with 2000 cities.

Max city number = 512

Is that the total amount of cities that you have that you have space for or the max amount of cities that civ will let you have?

Please note that a 180x180 map is in actuality a 180x90 map (16,200 tiles) and a 362x362 map is actually a 362x181 map (65,522 tiles). This is due to the way the civ3 isometric co-ordinate system is laid out; there's a thread with a bit more detail on this in C&C from a couple days ago if you're curious.

That is the maximum allowed total number of cities in the game for all civs (e.g. it could be 5 civs with 100 cities and a 6th with 12.) If you try to settle the 513th (or probably place one in the editor) you will get an error message.

EDIT: extra clarification

The most I've personally had is probably around a hundred; I can't play maps that actually reach the limit on my comp and still finish a game in this decade. Note that the 512 number is the total # of cities for all civs, not necessarily just you. (I edited my previous post to clarify this)

I play ICS rather often and have a quite boring method for naming my cities. The first one gets named 512, the second 511...well, it takes a while.

Has anyone reached that limit, ever?? It seems like *a lot* of cities.

I have reached that limit in PTW, with mucho room left to build. Map size is 362 * 362 with 60% water.

I've done it twice. One time, I finished off all the AI except for one city, so I was able to build 511 cities. And since the AI was restricted to one town, blockading their borders allowed me to disband most of my military saving megacash!

The other time, I only enabled Space Race as the victory type. I wiped out everyone and had all 512 cities...

First time hit the limit I played vanilla Civ 3, on a pangaea map with 16 civs. Now, I became so enraged because I couldn't build more, so I declared war on most of the remaining civs and started razing cities like a madman! :flamedevi

ah, memories!

That's 512 cities in total, not just with any one particular civ. If you have 16 civs in a game, that's only 32 cities per civ. Not really a lot.

I reach the limit every game I play since I use huge maps, 249 x 248. Keep in mind that 512 refers to the total number of cities in a game, not just a single civ.

The limit does indeed exist in PTW but I don't know that it would matter in the planned game you're talking about. If you have all the civs on then there's going to be enough warfare that cities will be routinely destroyed, thus keeping you under the cap of 512.

The 512 cap is only for existing cities. Former cities don't count...

I play ICS quite often and by no means consider my computer a monster. All I've got is some bargain 1.2gig Athlon with 400+megs of ram. My intraturns even late game are only a minute or two, and I run IE behind Civ so I can surf CFC simultaneously.
