NASCAR Nextel Cup announced!
Well, it seems that NASCAR has signed a 10-year deal with Nextel to replace Winston as the title sponsor of NASCAR, with the championship from 2004-on to be called the NASCAR Nextel Cup... which is an awful name, if I would say so myself. Now it remains to see what this will mean to the future of NASCAR. Personally, I would like them to move away from the 50-year old engine technology that the teams are currently running; Seriously, who uses carburetours (hacked up spelling) in their cars anymore anyway? NASCAR aren't even running "stock" cars anymore, because the technology in them is less than in road cars!

The name is going to take some getting used to. Nextel Cup just sounds different.

$75 mil per season.
Really, I am a bit disappointed, just the way the sport is going. I'm really pissed that the Southern 500 is not Labor Day at Darlington-you can't mess around with tradition. It's easy to mess around with stuff when your spokesman is someone like Jimmie Johnson, though. "Hi, I'm from California and this is my second year in the series and I like this!" Who they really need as a spokesman is Sterling Marlin. "Hi, I'm from Tennessee and I grew tobacco on my farm. I think we should stay in the South, etc." Seriously, why don't they ever interview him? Just another step in modernization...reaching out to more audiences while alienating the true hardcore fans. Nascar is forgetting the fans that brought it to this level; changing the Southern 500 around is a slap in the face. I think all the glitz and glamor sucks.

Well..I have mixed feelings I guess.Change is inevitable but tradition should/must be respected.
In order to go "mainstream" and attract new fans, they have to alienate their 'core' fans.Kinda risky but we'll see. If I see Alec Baldwin starting a race I''ll swear off NASCAR forever. |
