Angry Harbor problem

Im playing a dyp game and I have several island cities that are part of my territory as the map has alot of water. For some reason Im not getting the trade ability when I build a harbor in some of these cities. The resources to these islands are just whats on the island but I thought once I built the harbor all my cities are linked. Whats the quick answer here? thx......

Not knowing dyp but making assumptions that it retains similar mechanics:

do you have the tech or wonder to allow trade over sea tiles (Astronomy or Great Lighthouse in unmodded civ)

if it's over ocean, do you have the equivalent of Navigation/Magnetism?

trade routes can only go on 100% safe tiles - even a single sea/ocean tile is enough to break the route. Those cargo skippers just aren't as brave as your explorer galley captains.

While you have already found the answer to your problem, I would like to add one more thing. There must be a visible trade route. If you can't see the route from which your ships will reach that harbour, your city is not connected even if you have the requisite tech.

Happy CIVing!

I thought that might also be a problem but in one city there was a clearly visable route but ill keep that in mind for future games.

quick answer: suicide galley
the galley makes a dash across ocean tiles, but suppose under the fog there's a path of valid sea tiles that the galley could have gone through without trouble. you got there, but not through a safe path.
