It doesn't matter in any case (also if you have troops in their territory). When the other civ declares war on you, you wouldn't get a reputation hit.

The order of attacking (respectively having troops in foreign territory) only matters for MPP triggering. So if France had a MPP with -say- India, your troops will trigger that MPP. Possibly India will declare war on you during the inbetween turn, just as France signed that MA with England. The point of time of India declaring war on you depends on the ai playing order (could be checked by pressing shift-d, sorted from bottom to top IIRC). But most likely you will attack France with your troops there anyway, thus triggering MPP during your turn at the latest.
Basically, you would only have to worry about troops in foreign territory if there's a complex MPP network put up. But that wouldn't affect your reputation (as long as you don't declare war in the process on anyone while having "bracket" agreements due to MPPs you signed).
Hope this doesn't confuse...

For the rep hit, note that there's exceptions: e.g. if you give a lux to a third party for upfront money in exchange and the stuff is delivered via your enemy's trade network, you're the one to blame. Here, you must care about war declared on you.

Rep hits could be checked by putting something inacceptable (for the ai, that is) on the trade table and pressing "would you accept...". If your rep is shot, you get information about that civ you've once betrayed ("we know what you did to...").

They declared war on you. Go get 'em.

Now count the turns--10 to 1 says one of them will ask for peace before 20 turns is up and you're still fighting the other. This is supposed to be a rep hit, too, however the AI seems to care not about such things...

Later!

Like Grille said, once they declared war, all treaties between you and them are immediately voided. Therefore, you won't get a rep hit for whatever you do to them after that.

Jeez, Grille, you really have it down pat (you nasty perfectionist German )

yes, he is right, it is MPP where you ahve to be carefull: it may not be your fault you still get the hit. AIs breaking treaties in alliances(!) doesn't make it hard for you-

Doesn't anyone think that it is rather dumb to have the AI penalize you for breaking treaties yet they frankly don't care when it comes to another AI? Or do they actually take this into account when making a treaty with another AI?

They actually do take this into account when dealing with other AI civs.

Yes but even though I get massive ROP rapes on behalf of the various AI on my weaker cities I still see that little green line indicating ROP agreements between the offending civ and others down the line. Well I guess they could be getting paid for em.
thanks padma
