Is all fair in love and war?
Thanks for all the replies to my recent post, all have been welcome.
New question How many people here play with random settings, and at what levels. I have noticed many posts which talk about doing certain things in certain circumstances. I too got sucked into this. You know what im talking about. Which civ gives me the best advantage, and how can I weaken the AI. This is of course fine, but for me, the game has to be a random as poss, and If I start off in a crap position so much the better, as I may come accross something no-one has ever thought of. After all, they have not yet played the perfect game of Chess yet, and that only has 6 different peices and 64 squares... |

Before I started playing competition/comparison games, practically all of my games were all random. I love the idea of "play the hand you are dealt". For most succession games I play, the map (and likely the opponents) are random.

I usually play all random, exceot for barbs. It adds a bit of mystery to a game.

In my current game, I played everything Random, including Barbarian. It was a bad decision, 'cause i was playing the Expansionist Americans, and the Barbarians status turned out to be no Barbarians, and therefore not even a single goodie hut in the whole map.
So the expanisionist trait was completely useless. But nevertheless I press on and should win the game just before the Modern Age. |

Sometime in betweem GOTM and stuff I play a random game.
Now I sit on a 6 city island, with no recourses or luxuries and frantically researching MapMaking. I selected the level Monarch to be not completely over-run by the AI. I see a small piece of land S on my map and just guess where my first galley will go, in 18 turns? ![]() Random is fun, it seems it gave me archipelago map this time.

All random except map-size as this determines the length of the game. Map size also determines if I attack with swordmen (tiny small and standard) or horse (std, large, huge) purely because of the movement bonus.

I usually pick my civs but I pick them by trait not by UU, then I try and exploit those traits to their fullest, I can't tell you how many times I've switched governents in a religious, or how well I do warmongering with a militaristic..
