I Need Unit Instalation Help

Okay, so I downloaded a Crusader unit and am trying to incorporate it. All the files in the Crusader file are named Crusader{whatever}.
I made a civlopedia entry for it (by copying knight and just replacing the word knight or knights with crusader or crusader).
Next I did the same thing for the pedialcons in both parts, #ICON_PRTO_Crusader
art\civilopedia\icons\units\x_crusader.pcx
art\civilopedia\icons\units\x_crusader.pcx

and

#ANIMNAME_PRTO_Crusader
Crusader.

I haven't been able to get it to work. I've tried assigning the x_ part a number and that has not worked (when adding a new unit, what is that part supposed to be?). I've tried adding crusader to the text and civlopedia files in both the play the world and regular files (which one should I be adding crusader to?)

And I still haven't seen the icon for it in the editor even though I make sure the Crusader unit that I add with the add unit button looks exactly the same as a knight except for it's name and PRTO_Crusader.

In some of the tutorials (I try to peace instructions from seemingly incomplete tutorials, though it may just be my own fault for not understanding), I have have seen that we are supposed to work with a civ3mod.bic file. I have a civ3mod file and I don't know if it is the same as a civ3mod.bic file. In either case, the icon for the crusader doesn't show up when I open that either.

I don't have copytool because I've been told in multiple tutorials I don't need it.

Could someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong. The person that can help me out will be my hero.

Are the folder name and the .ini name both crusader?

Yes, all the names are correct. I also did this with a mountie unit that I downloaded and made sure all the names matched up, not only the file names but the info in the .ini and the .ini name were the same.

Maybe a stupid question, but did you remember to assign it to any civs?

Yup, I assigned it to Rome. And it isn't a stupid question because somewhere I didn't do something, and there is the potential that it is something simple, though I'm betting it is just some bad tutorials that I'm reading.

Crusader.
Is the period there? If so it won't work, cause it's looking for the file Crusader., not Crusader

That's my only thought

No, it is not there, but thanks for the thought.

And I'm going to re-post this part of my original, because there are two specific questions that I need answered:

I haven't been able to get it to work. I've tried assigning the x_ part a number and that has not worked (when adding a new unit, what is that part supposed to be?). I've tried adding crusader to the text and civlopedia files in both the play the world and regular files (which one should I be adding crusader to?)

I wish there was an idiot's guide for installing units.

Might be easier for us to work out the problem if you tell us exactly HOW it isn't working (ie: you load up the mod; it works but the Crusader doesn't appear in the build queue when it should, an error occurs when you try to build it, the Mod won't load at all etc.)

Okay, in the editor, the Crusader Icon doesn't appear. I can place one of them on the map, but no icon appears there either.

I go through my process and have some specific questions in the first post on this thread.

2 things
do you have it's units_32 pic installed?
2nd Q
If you're in PTW, have you set your path for the scenerio folder you're using?

If you're running the Mod in PTW, you shouldn't need a number for the x; you'll note all the new units in PTW follow this form.

Again, if running the Mod in PTW, you only need to add to the PTW civilopedia and pediaicons docs. In fact, you should really just add a copy of both of the former to Civilization III /CIV3PTW /Scenarios /[folder named the same as your mod's Bix] /Text folder, and make any additions/alterations to THOSE docs. Place any additional graphics in this folder too (eg: Crusader flcs), just mirror the file structure of the core game (eg: unit folders go in Civilization III /CIV3PTW /Scenarios /[folder named the same as your mod's Bix] /Art /Units folder). Just check out the form of the PTW included scenarios for a guide.

Its worth noting that you don't actually need any civilopedia entry to get a unit to 'work' in game, but the pediaicons entries are essential to avoid a crash.

The icon you select in the editor is the units_32 pic that computerdude113 referred to. It only shows up in game on the build queue (I think) and it shouldn't really matter if you just give it the knight pic. If you want to be really complete, get "Zulu's units_32 with 1000+ icons added" from the unit downloads section and add it to your Civilization III /CIV3PTW /Scenarios /[folder named the same as your mod's Bix] /Art /Units folder; then open up the editor, load your mod and reassign the Crusader pic.

When using Civ3XEdit (the ptw editor), you start with a copy of the ptw bix (used to be a bic in Civ3 original; sounds like that was an old tutorial) but when you save your mod you should rename it to whatever you want. Make sure this bix resides in your Civilization III /CIV3PTW /Scenarios folder. Once this setup is in place, this bix (your mod) will use any resources (graphics etc.) in the folder with the same name in the Civilization III /CIV3PTW /Scenarios folder, before resorting to the default files.

Sorry if I'm preaching to the converted here, but I've just found that using the PTW scenario system is a much cleaner way to mod, as it localises all changes and makes troubleshooting SO much easier.

Sounds like you haven't actually tried to start a game with this mod (just tried to add the unit to a map in the editor); might be worth starting a game and trying to build the Crusader (just temporarily assign it to no tech/no resource prerequisite to save time) and see what error the game states if/when it crashes.

Hope this helps.

How do you assign a certain unit to a civilization?
