Question Colonies

After going cold turkey for a week and a half. Last night I came back to Civ.

In my current game there are a lot of resources and lux that are just out of reach. Even with expansion I still won't reach them an time soon.

I've built two colonies so far and am a reasonable distance from the two other civs on this large continent.

I usually build cities to get resources and lux but in this game I require many colonies.

I would like to know how others view colonies and what tips they might have.

I find that colonies are just about useless, especially in the early game. You're much better of building a city. It increases your score, and give a bonus for defeding it. Colonies on the other hand don't give bonus, excpet for the terrain. And as far as I know they don't increase your score, AND you lose a worker. That's just my 2 cents.

I very rarely build a colony, and when I do it's usually to get immediately a resource that'll eventually fall within my borders anyway. Otherwise it'll just get run over by AI cultural borders.

Yup. If I build a colony at all, it has to be probably on that only iron/horse spot just 1 tile outside of my borders while I could not pop-rush a temple (respectively wait for expansion).

The main use I've found for colonies is conquering them from the AI. Unfortunately, they're just destroyed most of the time.

I'd have been cool if you could 'load' a settler into the colony giving you a new city and the worker back or something like that.

... or if, dependent on tech level, colonies had harbor/airport-like abilities, at least as far as the transportation thingie is concerned (so no "rebase missions" to colonies etc).

Colonies are weak, even the cultural border of the other civ can swallow them...is it a good reason to declare war? If yes it can be useful

My borders are now nearing the colonies I've made but some are still quite far.

I've places military units on resources close to the AI to hopefully slow them down.

I think I'll keep colonies as just an early game tactic.

I find colonies are useful sometimes, but only very rarely, and I never bother to defend them at all. I just plonk one down somewhere and reap the rewards.

My colonies have been defending me from hoards of barbs. The barbs are going after my defended colonies instead of my busy workers.

I may be warming to them

I've used colonies just one time.....I was in an huge continent, and there were only one island with horses, so i build there one city on the coast, and colonies across the island. I think it was un-necessary because later i ocupided the rest of the island with cities.

Just like it was already told, colonies just in case of borders with other civs.

I don't really like colonies. They are so tricky to defend! The other problem is is that you need to use a worker to create them. I don't know about you guys, but I need all the workers I can get.

I like colonies i usually build to many works any way so once they are done i take one, build a road to the resource (stragiegic), then build a colony, and some time or other i decid to send a garisson

I've used colonies in some occasions, but only once I really needed to.

Situation: Tiny Map, Many Civs left. I controlled the most land, but my opponents could at any point come together and attack me.
There was only one source of Aluminium on the map so that was my goal for the war.
I landed three transports of Artillery an three transports of tanks, I had 4 armies of tanks as well. The Carhagians had Mech Inf in they're cites so it would be tough taking em all.
The map was Panganea but we wore on each side of the map, and nobody wanted to give me RoP, so I concluded it would be easier to use transports instead of using large amounts of my treasure to bribe them all.

I easily took one coastal city. For a place to retreat if needed. Sun Tzu gave me instant Barracks. And harbor connection to my capital was rushed immediatly.
I had compiled a stack of tanks in my territory just coming home from a war with Indians, those wore my defending force incase Carthagians got Russians, Hiawatha, Japan and Mongols on his side against me.

I took their capital, and killing the King aswell, meaning rasing of both their cities. I had a captured worker in between my forces so I decided to make a colony on the Aluminuim-source. Even though I had a transport with settlers waiting nearby, and knowing I would settle in their territor shortly. In the same turn I upgraded every Tank in my home territory. That was of big importance!
The Russians and the Mongols attacked me, and suddenly they're facing Modern Armor and Radar Artlillery instead of Tanks.
After the rush of attack I counterattacked and easily took their capitals aswell.

The Colony saved my King!

colnies are good if iron is on a mountain and u need it quickly, also they serve as roads so u can build them on luxeries in the jungle to get jungle roads done quickly ecspecially if ur using a non indusaterious civ

I'm glad that there isn't a "colony strategy" that I was too dumb to discover, I use them infrequently, when there's a resource I want fast. It's often worth using a worker to colonize so I can get the benefit of coal 6 turns before my settler gets there. Unless I'm only interested in the resource in the shortterm, I will build a city over the colony. At the very least, I can build workers to emigrate to my other cities.

BTW, losing a city causes warwearness

30 points drops you to the next level

15 points for losing a city
2 points for losing a unit
1 point if the unit drops to 1 hp

would be interesting if you could keep a colony in enemy culture borders...but you must keep military on it to keep it secure
