Don't waste your resources building men at arms during the Feudal Age. You need as much gold as possible for upgrades during the Castle Age. So if you need an army early on, try building spearmen. They only cost food and wood!

It's been a long time since I've played, but build as many villagers as you can. You can never have too much resources.
