Question Automatically Fortifying Units

What does everyone think about the idea of a unit that automatically fortifies itself at the end of its movement, even if it's movenent is used up?

I'm think the rules would work like the fortifying to "heal". If you set a unit to move across the continent it would move each turn an after movement was used up, it would fortify itself. Once it got to it's destination it would "unfortify" if it has movement left or the next turn.

Is this enough to justify a 10 shield cost increase for the same unit in the Ancient Age? Or should it be a "free" enhancement for a UU/new unit.

Of course I have no idea how hard this would be to code.

I would think that the reason you can't use your full movement allowance *and* fortify in the same turn is that both actions take time. There's not time during a turn (okay, I know some of them are 50 years, 10 years, etc.) to do both. It's a choice you have to make.

I think it's a bad idea - like wilbill said, you can either move and forfiet the defense bonus or you can fortify for the bonus but give up movement. This trade off keeps every unit from fortifying every turn. If every unit were fortified all the time then it would be meaningless - raising the defense values of every unit and eliminating the fortify command would do the exact same thing.

<edit> I misunderstood the exact proposal. You want it to be that specific types of units would ignore the tradeoff? I still think it would be bad - just giving them a higher defence would do the same thing. Also, a unit that heals at the end of every turn even when moving full speed has too much of an advantage.

Bad idea man. It might be kind of hard to code (seeing as how i'm a coder but anyway). The idea itself is fairly cool to come up with, keep thinking up new ideas and post them and we will critisize them (in a good or bad way)

Bad idea. As above it should take time to fortify. When on the move troops should be more vulnerable.

I was a little unclear, it seems.

I was thinking of a specific unit(s) that would have this ability, not all units having this ability. Much like a Berserker/Marines special attack ablilty. Or a defensive bombard ablilty of archers/longbowmen/guerilla/etc...

The unit wouldn't actually heal as a result of it. I just wanted that to be an example of how unfortify at the end of his movement path (total movement, not each turn movement).

Also, I didn't think of this, but the auto fortify only applies to movement. This is why it's different to just upping it's defense value.

Let's say the unit has one movement and it attacks. No matter the outcome it would not fortify. If the unit did anything other than move it would not be able to fortify unless it had movement available at the end of turn. For example, a three movement unit attacking, moving, it still has a movement point left over so it could fortify. This isn't a change to the game.

I still don't like the Idea. I hardly ever Fortify units anyway, and when I attack, I generally "Shift y" them, make them wake up when enemy units come near. If they Auto came awake when enemies came near, then I'm all for it, but not just to Fortify.

What a would like to see is a one turn fortify when you skip the unit ( space bar) It is a bit anoying to wake the fortified unit every turn.

On a per-unit basis, it might be a good idea. How to implement it tho, I have no idea.

Bad idea IMHO. It would be unbalancing and unfair. You could attack and then fortify. It's not fair for counterattacking player

Maybe I did not explain my Idea very well. What I mean, is when you decide to skip a unit (not move a unit or have some movement left on a unit). the action of pressing space bar should fortifiy the unit for one turn.

That would not change the rules. It would only prevent a player to search for that unit on the next turn, and move it.
